When you make a gift, you provide Scripps Researchers the time, resources and freedom to investigate problems without easy answers, like why cancer becomes resistant to treatment or how to stop neurodegeneration before it starts. This #GivingTuesday, help us shape the future of human health: scripps.edu/givingtuesday

Congratulations to Keary Engle (@EngleLab), dean of graduate and postdoctoral studies and chemistry professor at Scripps Research, who is the recipient of a 2025 Green Chemistry Challenge Award from the ACS Green Chemistry Institute (@ACSGCI) in recognition of research excellence that exemplifies the principles of green chemistry. This award honors Engle’s efforts to support cleaner, more sustainable ways to make medicines and other widely used industrial products. Engle’s breakthrough centers on a new nickel-based catalyst—a cost-effective alternative to palladium—that works in normal air conditions, eliminating the need for specialized equipment and reducing energy use. By inventing a strategy to stabilize an otherwise reactive form of nickel and harnessing it for catalytic applications, Engle and his lab have opened new possibilities for manufacturing and are enabling streamlined access to a range of functional compounds—from medicine to advanced materials. This is how you enable uptake of a new method! Hats off to the Knight Chemicals team for making a hydrazides coupling starter kit tailor made for medicinal chemists! Obviously I’m biased since I adore @BaranLabReads chemistry and the folks that develop it but dang what a product.

With the Gutierrez group @UCLA , we report a unique mode of electrocatalytic semi-hydrogenation to generate Z-alkenes using a redox mediator strategy. Distortion analyses by DFT reveal a distinct origin of stereoselectivity. Exciting times ahead! chemrxiv.org/engage/chemrxiv…
