📹 Why write a brilliant paper that only five people will ever read? Nobel winners share their working papers online. Five readers, or five thousand? 📚 Well known for regularly sharing their research on X and sub-stack, Charles Gavamukulya, PhD researcher at the University of Johannesburg, on why Ugandan & African researchers should share their work in public, build readership, and let people know Ugandans are thinking about our problems. 86th #PolicyDigestPodcast 👇 youtu.be/MQAwvw1dz4Y?si=I30b…

Did you know? Early-stage prostate cancer often has no noticeable symptoms. A man can feel perfectly healthy while the cancer develops. That's why regular health check-ups and conversations with a doctor about PSA testing are important. Don't wait for symptoms to appear. #KarisMedical #BeyondCare #DidYouKnow #ProstateCancerAwareness #Movember

At Alere S. S. in Adjumani, as part of the Health club, there are boys that are doing a great job promoting menstrual knowledge and awareness against harmful cultural practices such as child marriage. I promised the boys that, to show my appreciation for their work, I will draw them and credit them publicly (make them famous) - to inspire more to such constructive work. The first I am sharing is Solomon Kuch. Share until it reaches him in the refugee camp in Adjumani.

Your heart has a blind spot. For about 20 milliseconds of every beat, a hard enough hit to the chest can make it stop. On Monday a goalkeeper's knee caught a Spanish soccer player square in the chest, and his heart stopped for around 20 minutes. His name is Jesús de Miguel. He's 30 and plays striker for Tenerife. In stoppage time he was chasing a long ball when Andorra's keeper, Jesús Owono, came flying out of his box toward midfield to beat him to it. De Miguel went down, rolled onto his back and lost consciousness. Owono got a straight red, the ref called the game off at 2-2, and medics worked on de Miguel on the grass before rushing him to the hospital. COPE Tenerife reports he was in cardiac arrest for about 20 minutes before they got a pulse back. Your heart runs on electricity. After every beat the muscle has to reset its charge before the next one, and on an ECG that reset shows up as a little hump called the T wave. If something slams into your chest while that hump is on its way up, roughly 10 to 30 milliseconds before the top, the heart cells get stretched at the exact moment they're most electrically unstable. They misfire. The bottom chambers start quivering, and a quivering heart can't move any blood. Cardiologists call this commotio cordis, and without a shock it kills within minutes. And it doesn't take much force. Baseballs, hockey pucks, even snowballs have triggered it. A hit that's too hard tends to bruise the heart instead, which is why the dangerous ones often look ordinary. That's what confused so many people watching Damar Hamlin collapse in 2023, because the tackle looked routine. His doctors later confirmed it was commotio cordis. Tenerife hasn't said what caused de Miguel's arrest, and a knee at full sprint can do plenty of other damage, so I'd be careful calling it that. A little after midnight the club put out a short update saying his condition had "worsened neurologically." That one word tells you which clock everyone's watching now. Doctors can often shock a heart back into rhythm, but the brain starts losing cells after about four to six minutes without oxygen-rich blood. So almost everything comes down to how fast someone starts CPR and gets a defibrillator on the chest. In the US commotio cordis registry, survival went from 34% of cases between 1993 and 2006 to 58% between 2006 and 2012, as AEDs showed up at more fields and rinks. Hamlin had a trainer doing CPR on him almost right away and was cleared to play four months later. Christian Eriksen got shocked right on the pitch at Euro 2020 and was back playing within nine months. Twenty minutes is a really long time on that clock. Spain's going to spend the next week arguing about Owono's challenge and how long he should be banned. That stuff matters, but for de Miguel's family the only news that counts is coming out of the ICU at Candelaria. Really hoping he pulls through.
🚨🚨| SCARY MOMENT: This happened in the match between Tenerife and Andorra on the Spanish Second division.

Thank you everyone for your kindness and condolences during the sending off of our mother, friend, sister. Due to family and many generous people, we did not incur debt for funeral expenses. In fact, there's some leftover and others have continued to give. To honor her memory and legacy, we are using the funds to set up the "Mary Mbabazi Endowment", which will provide modest scholarships for high character nurses, in particular, those pursuing oncology rotations. Lisa, my chief of staff, will be running point. My uncle and mom's brother @Rutooza will support.

1 Ophthalmologist serving the 9 districts of Karamoja, wooow!!!!!
Don’t come to my inbox asking for an appointment. You’ll barely get an answer. In government hospitals, we expect you to come and join the queue when you want to see the doctor. It’s as simple as that. And for the common question of: “Dr, I have a patient with an eye problem. How do we get to you?” The answer is simple: “Use any means of transport available and come to Moroto RRH” “What if we don’t find you?” Well, the eye unit doesn’t close. There are always clinicians available to see anyone who walks in. “What if I only want to see you in particular?” Well, then keep coming until the day you find me. Mondays I’m in OPD Tuesdays And Wednesdays I’m in theatre Thursdays I’m in OPD Fridays I do research and administrative duty. And before you complain, Remember that I’m 1 eye doctor for the 9 districts of Karamoja.
