This week, @FAO released the Peat-Emit report
The numbers behind peatland emissions just got rewritten.
The global evidence base for how much CO₂ and N₂O drained organic soils release grew by 45% — 560 data points, up from the 2013 IPCC Wetlands Supplement.
Report is out🧵
The biggest gains are where the data was thinnest.
Warm-climate Asia now has ~2.5x more data points than in 2013 — meaning countries that couldn't credibly report their peat emissions finally can.
That's the whole point: measurement is the precondition for action.
Proud to have served on the international steering committee for this, representing the University of Eastern Finland @UniEastFinland alongside colleagues at @FAO, @UKCEH and the University of Leicester.
