Last week, with the change in House control, I left a great job. I was Special Litigation Counsel in the House Office of General Counsel, litigating on behalf of Congressional committees and @SpeakerPelosi, and handling special projects. A long, self-indulgent thread follows. 1/

Today is a mathematical date we won't see again for 78 years. 10/24/26 10² + 24² = 26² It's called a Pythagorean Triple Day. There are infinitely many Pythagorean triples, but only 12 dates this century satisfy the equation.Today is the last. Next one: March 4, 2105.

The attorney general thinks we can't read. He's plainly trying to stop the certification of Alaska's election depending on how it turns out.
The Department of Justice does not seek to stop any ballot from being cast or to stop the certification of Alaska's election. This litigation seeks to ensure that after Alaskans cast their ballots, they are preserved in a manner so that only Alaska's governing officials have the information necessary to make a determination as to whether Alaskan voters were confused or mislead. The lawsuit was written by Justice Department attorneys and the Department did not coordinate with any campaign or candidate, but rather relied solely on federal law.

A great example of the logical somersaults the Vivek ad is making his allies do. His own running mate basically concedes that, yes, the mother they used in their ad stayed with a man who sexually abused her daughter. (Via @nytimes)

Alaskans don’t need any help voting for their preferred candidates, and the State of Alaska has already handled this by clearly distinguishing the candidates on this year’s ballot. The Department of Justice should never have filed this lawsuit. apnews.com/article/alaska-se…

It could not be more stark, according to the data. You could have the hardest-working, most prodigious Congressional representative or the most obstructive. “Based on 84 votes she cast on land use since she joined the board in 2021, Chan was second only to former Board President Aaron Peskin in amassing a record consistently opposed to liberalizing housing regulation.” “From Wiener’s first session in the state Senate in 2017-2018 through the 2025-2026 session, he authored the most bills of any legislator in the chamber, at 186. Of those bills, 97 passed and were signed by the governor — the second-most over that period.” sfchronicle.com/politics/art…

One of the fall back defenses people have made about @VivekGRamaswamy's ad attacking Acton is that Acton's mother just said she lied about living in a tent. Cledith Arthur's 1978 arrest warrant lists Terrace Lake Park, Route 7 as his address

please. stop. yes, the other campaign runs mean ads too. this wasn't a mean ad. This was about childhood sexual abuse. Republicans weaponized it. Be as disgusted with me as you want, if there are no lines in the sand, we don't deserve civilization. nationalreview.com/corner/wh…

Not laughing. Just seeing what we tried to tell everyone back then. He’s a bad guy. It’s a shame he continues to get away with it.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

They are a protest/GOTV/organizing group that clearly signaled today was a day of action. You cut off their comms. There was every reason to understand why there would be high volume. This isn’t acceptable. More action and voting is coming going into the midterms. What assurances can you give that this will not happen again?
When accounts post, share or comment at very high frequencies it can trigger automated systems. That's what happened with the No Kings IG account in the lead up to today's day of action. Unfortunately, that automated action was clearly taken in error. Everything is now working as it should and we sincerely apologize.

ZACHARIA IS ON THE WAY OUT ALREADY 👇 Q: Would you have liked to have known that Katie Zacharia didn't pass the bar? TRUMP: Katie has been treated very badly by the media. Very very badly. Very unfair. I just asked her, is this for you? And she's a nice person. I'm going to let her make that decision. Sean Hannity was a little bit tough. Katie is off to a start that, the news has been so nasty to her. I told her, 'Honestly, if I were you, I would reconsider.' Maybe it's not for her

This is a tell. Trump almost tells Putin to stop hitting Ukraine. But then he stops himself and shifts to keeping the focus on Zelensky and oil refineries. (This despite Russia having apparently first broken Trump's self-declared energy ceasefire.)

A note about this White House statement: I don't believe the media plaintiffs have asked for access to the Oval Office, though that's been a focus of other cases like the AP case.
A White House official confirms that the administration intends to appeal Judge Kelly's order prohibiting Trump from banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico while the lawsuit plays out. Here's the full comment: "The Fake News has no place demanding a spot in the President’s Oval Office. The lies they smear are a disservice to the American public and tear at the very fabric of our Democracy. They’re completely capable of reporting from directly outside. We intend to appeal this misguided decision."

.@Scaramucci You can't let her break your record so soon. At least Babe Ruth was dead when Roger Maris hit 61 HRs.
Ruhle: "Wow. I want to just read this to you. A quote from a White House official reaction to Zacharia's first press briefing. 'Getting behind the podium is tough, but she got off on the wrong foot. She needs to get much better fast, otherwise she'll break Scaramucci's record.'"

President Trump complained at length tonight that he hasn't been given the Nobel Peace Prize for having "settled eight wars," then recited a list of supposed wars settled that includes... - "Egypt and Ethiopia" (who had a diplomatic dispute, not a war) - "Kosovo and Serbia" (who also weren't at war under Trump) - "The Democrat(ic) Republic of the Congo and Rwanda" (the war in the eastern DRC never ended despite a peace deal brokered by his administration that didn't include the rebel coalition doing the fighting) - "Israel and Iran" last year (Israel went back to war with Iran this year along with the Trump-led US) - "Israel and Hamas" (Israel continues to conduct frequent attacks in Gaza despite a ceasefire) Trump also claimed he's "about to settle or win" the war with Iran, the one he started, and also "Russia-Ukraine," though he'd repeatedly promised to end that one within 24 hours of taking office in 2025.
