With several new staff joining us this year, I’m reminded that getting someone hired is only the beginning. I need to slow down and make sure they have what they need to succeed. We’ve all been new. We all need someone to help us find our way.

Years ago, my friend and mentor, @JackParkerTCB, shared two characteristics of superstar teachers: an undying sense of hope and being a continual learner. This past week, he shared a third: high EQ (emotional intelligence). Read more below. #MondayMemo

Our preacher’s wife, Sarah Floyd, used to say, “Fake it until you make it." There’s a lesson about discipline in those words. I’m not motivated every day. None of us are. We just have to keep showing up, doing what we know we need to do. #MondayMemo

In education, some kids are hard to reach. Some days are frustrating. Sometimes we wonder if we're making a difference. That's when anyway matters. Care anyway. Try anyway. Believe in them anyway. Keep showing up anyway. Our kids are worth it.

“I don’t wanna change the world, I just wanna make it a little better.” This week’s Monday Memo was inspired by a @nikomoon song and a simple reminder about the work we do at ICES. We may not change the world, but we can make i a little better.

This week’s Monday Memo comes from something I learned while getting my soccer referee certification. On the field or in the classroom, getting better is a continuous cycle. Prepare. Teach. Reflect. Improve. Repeat. Get 1% better each day.

This week’s Monday Memo was inspired by Garth Brooks and one of my favorite songs, “The River.” The school year will have rocks, turns, and rough water along the way. We’ll learn, adjust, and keep moving forward. We’ll keep going “til the river runs dry.” ericllong.wordpress.com/2026…
Sometimes we don’t get to see where all the little moments are leading. We just keep showing up, putting in the work and believing in our kids. Then one day, we realize just how much it all added up. That’s true in soccer. It’s true in our classrooms too.

I debated whether I should make the 4 hour drive for a scrimmage, but when I woke up at 3:30 this morning thinking about it, I knew I couldn’t miss it. And I’m so glad I went. Aiden got his first college soccer minutes today! He played 35 minutes and played really well. #BLESSED
One of the highlights of my summer was attending the World Cup with my boys. We went to see Spain, but Cabo Verde gave us an underdog story to remember.
We have underdogs in our schools this year, too. Sometimes they need a chance.

The World Cup gave us a little inspiration for our theme this year. One School. One Team. Different backgrounds. Different roles. But one purpose—doing everything we can to help our kids be their best.

Thank you to Shelby Floyd for the message, “How to Show Love to Your Child.”
Share Your Time. Discipline With Love. Listen When Lecturing. Learn to Laugh.
A great reminder for us as educators and how we can show love to our students each day.

The "Starfish Story" is an excellent story about the power of our effort to make a difference. As an educator, you make a difference! Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! #MakeADifference #StarfishStory #StarfishClub #MondayMemo

Growing up an IU fan, I was a big Bobby Knight fan. What sticks with me now is his focus on discipline: “Discipline is knowing what to do. Knowing when to do it. Doing it to the best of your abilities. Doing it that way every single time.” #MondayMemo

My mentor @JackParkerTCB says superstar teachers have 2 characteristics: an undying sense of hope and being a continual learner.
When we learn more, we can do more for kids.
What are you getting better at right now? #MondayMemo #DaretoDream

One thing stood out watching The Masters this weekend. Every golfer sees the shot before they swing. So, what are you seeing for yourself? A Clear vision drives growth. Are you the educator you want to be?
Great reminder from @DarrinDonnelly

Are you a carrot, egg, or coffee bean? How do you handle adversity? Check out my blog post about @JonGordon11 and @damonwest7 book entitled The Coffee Bean. #TheCoffeeBean #BeACoffeeBean

“In life, you’re either growing or you’re dying.” – Lou Holtz
In education, growth isn’t about fixing failure, it’s about choosing to get better every day for our students. We can be proud of our work and still push to improve.

Last weekend at Winterfest, I was reminded that greatness is not about the spotlight. It is about service.
As educators, we have daily chances to model that for our students. #MondayMemo #GreaterThan #Winterfest
