I love weekends like this one.
You have an R-rated body horror from DC. A 3-hour documentary that people can’t stop talking about. A tremendous dark fantasy from the wizards at LAIKA. A whimsical romantic fable that’s light and just lovely to experience, and a fun cat-and-mouse thriller featuring the great Helen Mirren.
All different, all Certified Fresh. Good stuff to watch no matter what your vibe is. When we’re complaining about Hollywood and complaining about how nothing feels fresh or unique, let’s remember weekends like this still exist. And let’s get out there to support these films so weekends like this continue to exist in the future.
Wow, out of the gate #Clayface is at 94% on the PopcornMeter, which matches THE DARK KNIGHT and BATMAN BEGINS for highest Audience Scores for a DC movie.
LAIKA's #Wildwood becomes the 2nd wide release of 2026 to go Certified Fresh at 100% with 80 or more reviews.

The other major box office story this week belongs to Netflix. Yes, Netflix. For the first time in its history, Netflix has reported box office numbers for one of its films, LA BOLA NEGRA…
- Opening with a $69,375 per-screen average (PSA) across four theaters in LA and NY.
- That’s the second-highest PSA ever for a non-English-language film, behind only PARASITE.
- It’s also the highest PSA ever for a Spanish-language film.
Significant numbers for a film destined to be among the bigger awards contenders this year, but also a historic moment for Netflix. Its commitment to— and philosophy around — theatrical releases is changing right now.
Maybe more stories will be written once NARNIA arrives in IMAX for a 50-day exclusive run, but it’s starting to happen now, and that’s a great thing.
BOX OFFICE: A24’s YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING opens w/ $15M. Some stats:
- Biggest opening for a non-music doc in over two decades
- 2nd biggest opening ever for a non-music doc
- The biggest domestic opening for a 2026 film in fewer than 900 theaters
- Among Top 5 biggest domestic openings ever for A24
- It’s the first time A24 has delivered three $15M-plus domestic opening weekends in a single year
- Lance Oppenheim has now directed or co-directed two @A24 movies that are among its Top 5 biggest domestic openings (and both opened less than a month apart)

BOX OFFICE: a24’s YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING is currently projected to earn an estimated $12M opening weekend (I think it goes higher), which would make it the 2nd biggest opening ever for a non-music doc.
The one to beat remains Michael Moore's 2004 film Fahrenheit 9/11 w/ $23.9M. Still, this will be the biggest opening for a non-music doc in over two decades.
Significant milestone today as #YouCanSeeEverything becomes the first wide release of 2026 to go Certified Fresh at 100% with 80 or more reviews at @rottentomatoes.

There's a new version of this post
There’s something wonderfully fearless about LAIKA’s #Wildwood. A breathtaking feat of animation and craftsmanship, it reminded me of dark fantasy classics like LABYRINTH and THE DARK CRYSTAL, when children’s adventures weren’t afraid to get weird, scary and genuinely dangerous.
Everything about this film is terrific, from its stunning visuals and richly imagined world to its memorable characters. I love how it embraces the darker, stranger parts of its story and goes places many animated family movies today would shy away from.
And it features my favorite movie sidekick of the year. Curtis FTW!
Had a great time at the #Narnia trailer event earlier today, featuring a wonderful conversation between Greta Gerwig and Stephen Colbert. Gerwig always speaks so beautifully and passionately about cinema.
She talked about how the Narnia books helped shape who she is, and how C.S. Lewis’s autobiography “Surprised by Joy” became a major inspiration for her approach to the material.
Love that she shot on film, and especially loved the way Gerwig connected the communal experience of practicing faith with the ritual of going to the movies. Both are about gathering together, sharing something meaningful and feeling connected to something larger than ourselves.
One of my favorite stories was how Gerwig landed “Stairway to Heaven,” a notoriously difficult song to license for a film. She met directly with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and it was their shared appreciation for C.S. Lewis’s work that ultimately helped her secure the song, which plays such a defining role in the first trailer.
(I’m also a sucker for a good hat, and this is a good hat!)
