Iván Szelényi (1938-2026), a towering figure in sociology, one of the finest global intellectuals Hungary and Eastern Europe has ever produced, has died. Rest in peace and solidarity. He was my "Ph.D. grandad", the supervisor of my supervisor, and a constant presence in the background of my early academic career. He wrote more recommendation letters for me than I can count. Rec letters always on time. He read and reviewed my book. He inspired. He combined Marx, Weber, and Polanyi with an ease and elegance that's hard to match. He belonged to a kind of academic era and milieu that is disappearing, literally dying out. He was formed in and represented a university tradition that expected a scholar to master social theory, run serious empirical research, and speak to a public. Very few are left who do all three at his level. The academic system that produced people like him is being aggressively dismantled. He was the founding dean of social sciences and Max Weber Professor Emeritus at NYU Abu Dhabi, William Graham Sumner Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Yale, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He served as president of the Hungarian Sociological Association and vice president of the American Sociological Association. UCLA honored him with its Luckmann Distinguished Teaching Award. The Hungarian state awarded him the Széchenyi Prize. Let us remember him the way I think he would want to be remembered in public: the impossibly well read, quietly witty professor at the front of the room, explaining the Western social theory canon. His brilliant Yale lecture course, Foundations of Modern Social Theory, is still online. With us for posterity: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL…

An interesting read - to keep in mind when reflecting on the new NHS ten-year plan.
The latest ADASS Spring Survey is out and it’s clear adult social care is under real pressure. Budgets are tight. Demand is rising. Unpaid carers are stretched. But it also identified opportunity, especially around Technology Enabled Care (TEC). 🔹 89% of Directors say more funding for preventative tech would make the biggest difference 🔹 Confidence in emerging tech is still low 🔹 Investment in tech is down compared to last year With the right backing, councils can lead the shift from hospital to community, treatment to prevention, and analogue to digital. 📖 Read more here: buff.ly/ebnxuHy

The Committee has drawn on evidence submitted by @CentreForCare and @MPetrillo25 in their report to warn the Government it will not achieve its ambitions to support more people into work without a functioning social care system.
The social care system in England is broken. We're calling on Government to measure the cost of inaction on reforming the current system and see the sector's wider potential. Read the report: committees.parliament.uk/com…

Simon Bottery’s written a useful summary of the Darzi report
While the focus of the Darzi report is on the NHS it does have a few, largely helpful, lines on #socialcare which, it says ‘has not been valued or resourced sufficiently, which has both a profound human cost and economic consequences.’ Very short thread. theguardian.com/society/2024…

1/ 🧵 I’m proud to publish our report on how migrant care workers are being trapped in exploitative jobs by their visa. We’re adding our voice - and evidence from more than 150 cases - to the chorus of people calling out this injustice. t.ly/Z4-sK

1. ‘Banning’ in this case simply means stopping one part of a scheme the government itself initiated barely two years ago. 2. This has nothing whatsoever to do with ‘stopping the boats’: ‘careworkers’ are arriving legally at the government’s invitation. #socialcare
Today in Parliament we have laid an order to ban overseas care workers from bringing dependants. This is just one part of our plan to deliver the biggest-ever cut in migration 👇
