On 21 October, we celebrate #AppleDay. Dorset and Somerset folklore tells of Lazy Lawrence, a green-eyed pixy pony who gallops through orchards guarding apples. His name is said to refer to the inability to walk after drinking too much cider: “Lazy Lawrence has got your legs!” 🍎

blooming right beside me
whispers gently:

returns everlastingly to us!" Bokusui Wakayama

Autumn-flowering Cyclamen hederifolium has the curious old name ‘sowbread’, recalling the wild pigs said to root up its tubers to eat. Vita Sackville-West saw something altogether more delicate in its swept-back petals, likening them to ‘leveret ears laid back’. #FolkloreThursday

ALT A collage of four photographs of autumn-flowering Cyclamen hederifolium. Delicate flowers in shades of pale lilac, pink and magenta rise on slender stems above heart-shaped, ivy-like leaves, beautifully marbled with silver and green. A close-up reveals the swept-back petals, resembling the ears of a young hare, with deeper magenta colouring at their base. The flowers grow in clusters among moss and fallen autumn leaves.

“October is the month that seems
All woven with midsummer dreams;
She brings for us the golden days
That fill the air with smoky haze;
She brings for us the lisping breeze,
And wakes the gossips in the trees,
Who whisper near the vacant nest
Forsaken by its feathered guest.”
