Career chase day for me with a monster supercell in Kentucky followed by a close-range tornado intercept in Missouri! A vortex of light debris crossed the road ~1000ft in front of me after the funnel dissipated, so I think a large, diffuse circulation extended beyond the funnel…

It’s cool to visualize how topography can possibly influence tornado environments in Arizona with the HRRR model. Valley surfaces have increased temperature/moisture and weaker winds, which increase instability and low level shear compared to higher elevations (second sounding).

Society is literally devolving into the Wall E movie—accelerated greatly by AI—and it’s quite sad
We now have AI meteorology books being sold to help you “master… atmospheric processes in one afternoon.” Unfortunately, expertise continues to be devalued as the public increasingly consumes soft-serve slop. The atrophy of American intellect continues to accelerate.

The United States of America has collapsed. Rival regions from the National Weather Service have taken over. Who are you pledging your allegiance to?

Last week I showed that I did some rudimentary data collection and analysis on tropical cyclone tornado events. Since then, I trained a basic machine learning model on the data and it has some surprisingly promising results 🧵. I used a random forest of 300 trees to predict...

...like Milton's infamous tornado outbreak, which the model handled well. I tried 2 days with Hurricane Ian: the first was an outbreak in a 5% risk. The second was a busted 10% risk with 1 tornado. Despite having no glaring differences in the parameters and sounding, the model...

...while not perfect, did a decent job indicating which day had a higher tornado risk. Of course, in any forecasting situation, the model is dependent on the accuracy of the weather model, while these analyses were done on historical RAP-RUC data.

I've had lot of conversations with other meteorologists I respect who feel strongly (with good arguments!) this wasn't a sting jet. There's a continuum here, though, and I'm not sure you'll ever fully satisfy the classic Browning definition of a sting jet with a transitioning TC.

Our 12Z experimental HAFS forecast the day of landfall picked up on the structure pretty well, just showed it a little further offshore. It's not really a traditional "sting jet" at the base of the "comma head" because there wasn't one yet (hadn't really fully ET'd yet). But if you look, it seems like there was some really robust subsidence on the backside that likely brought strong winds down to the surface, similar to sting jet. Very interesting case that I want to dig into more.

THEORY THREAD | What happened in Pensacola, Florida during Hurricane #Isaias. The strongest winds in a tropical cyclone is typically seen in the NE Quadrant of the cyclone. However, Isaias strongest winds near landfall occurred in the NW & SW quadrants. So what happened?
