But I do think it's worth noting that there's a whole generation of students who witnessed that and thought, "oh no, maybe industry won't ever accept me or my work," and they're still thinking about it to this day---that's sad, and I hope things get better for those students

It's been a rough couple news days if you care about the social impact of tech.😞
I've pulled together a couple articles below, but to summarize: AI applications are genuinely hurting people, companies are profiting off it & we have increasing evidence self regulation is a myth.

Nine months ago, I learned that Facebook has a Responsible AI team, and has had some form of it since Cambridge Analytica. I began to wonder: what has it been doing these past three years? Nearly four-dozen interviews later, here's what I found. technologyreview.com/2021/03…

And this is how it starts.

“Although she was on a promotion track, when she got a new white male boss, she said he repeatedly moved the goalposts on what she needed to earn the promotion. After pushing back again and again, she ultimately transferred to another team, where she still works.”
“All 10 Black employees who spoke to Recode said either they or Black colleagues they know were hired at lower levels in Amazon’s internal hierarchy than their qualifications justify.”
“Four of the Black women who spoke to Recode said they sought mental health counseling while at Amazon, either solely or in large part because of their experience working at the company.”
I just want to say that I know a Black employee at Amazon and this is 100% true. We need to remember that in situations like this, real people get very hurt. They deserved better.

Replying to @palantir @PalantirTech
Ah I’ve seen this tweet so often in mix-ups 😩 Makes me wonder how many tweets to @PalantirTech get missed. Thanks for being a company that doesn’t do work with ICE!
"We have a voice in making technology that aligns with our democratic values...#CodedBias offers us so many opportunities to talk about decisions being made on our behalf that are not necessarily decisions we agree with." - @merbroussard
“For me, it’s always been: first, who am I? I have to know who I am first to know how to navigate the world, because if I become something that I’m not supposed to become, then I’m in the wrong place, whether I’ve made it in other people’s eyes or not.” - Chadwick Boseman 2/2
He pointed out Chadwick Boseman's philosophy on taking roles that mattered to his story and personal journey. Chadwick would tell his agents: “I want to work with that actor, but I don’t want to play that role. I want to meet him when I’m doing something better than that.” 1/2
In terms of advice for those looking to break into this space, Will said to reflect on the question: "What story am I trying to craft?...Once I [became] more in tune with what I wanted to do personally, I left [that role] and kept going elsewhere with my journey."
"@Palantir has done work to help separate children at the border with Homeland Security. We don’t want to be part of that. It’s not [that we get work] we want to turn down. It’s more so that we believe there’s always a way to do work that’s consistent with humanity."
@WillGriffin1of1 stressed to us that at @hypergiant "the client can’t dictate for us what our ethics are. They can dictate whether or not they want to do business with us, but they can’t dictate for us what is acceptable or unacceptable for us from an ethical point of view." 👏
"So many use cases have made me realize: When you think of society as a stakeholder, you discover more ways to deliver value. That’s what puts you far ahead of another company that’s thinking narrowly about a tech solution." - @WillGriffin1of1
