"Obviously, Paul Heyman would be a big white whale for me, as would Michael Hayes. Michael Hayes would not only give you the territory stuff, but he could give you the WCW stuff, look at this really long uninterrupted run behind the scenes in WWE. He’s not very online and, obviously, that’s by design. So if you could actually hear him in his natural state, just talking wrestling, there’s a reason he’s been so successful and been with WWE for so long. I think that the narrative out there maybe doesn’t give him full credit for that. So I would love to reshape the way people think about Michael Hayes one day.”

There was a stretch during his rookie year, where he was shooting around 52% from 3. The minutes reduction, new talent in LA and that rescinded trade for Mark Williams affected his confidence and overall play. He's 25 years old and could shine in an environment that actually believes in him.

I don't think that people fully understand the process here..
The #WWERaw after Summerslam Royce Keys was taken out by Jacob Fatu. This was the beginning of setting the wheels in motion for his heel turn. That was at the beginning of August. That means plans for this group began just before August. Carmelo Hayes has been off TV since August 14th when he lost to Baron Corbin. This is after Keys being attacked. Then on August 24th OTM joined a returning Keys.
Since then Melo has not been on TV. As this tweet mentions because Keys wanted Melo in the group Melo was taken off of TV completely while the groups storyline kicked into gear. Melo has been missing in action on purpose for the last 3 months so that they could eventually add him to this storyline.
You could argue that his booking was less than stellar prior to that on #Smackdown from Wrestlemania - Summerslam...but after that they had plans for him. He's simply been waiting in the wings for this moment.
