You knew this Commodore 64 game as Commando — but in Germany it was released as Space Invasion. Elite Systems swapped the enemy soldiers for white android robots that look a lot like Star Wars Stormtroopers (and made the vehicles more futuristic) in an attempt to avoid Germany’s strict youth protection rules. It didn’t work — the re-skinned version still ended up on the index. This short video explains why and what actually happened.

What was the first game that made you feel like a fighter pilot? For a lot of people on the Commodore 64, it was Falcon Patrol.

I am in love with this printer! It's for the Commodore B128, and it's made of the same material and has the same design language! If only I could properly yellow the B128 so they matched...

Most obscure Ocean Commodore 64 game: Moonshadow Ocean were the kings of the C64 in the late ’80s—big licences, polished platformers, the works. Then there’s Moonshadow. Coded and designed by George Wright (with Vega Graphics on the art and Wally Beben on the sound), it was built for Ocean in 1988 and got as far as a striking title screen (that skull-and-rings image has a bit of Rodney Matthews about it) and a playable multi-screen platformer/shooter. You crash-land on a hostile planet after waking too late from cryo-sleep, then hop around in a spacepod hunting for Plasma Pods while keeping an eye on Air, Energy and Power. Ocean never released it. An early prototype slipped out through the cracking scene instead—complete with different panels, an unused loading screen, and a leftover testing mode where hitting space instantly tops up your stats. The project was later reworked and put out on the cheap by Cascade/Gamebusters as Zone Trooper, with enough changes that the two feel related but not identical. It’s the kind of near-miss that makes the C64 archive interesting: close enough to feel finished, obscure enough that most people have never seen the Ocean version. The prototype is still floating around (Games That Weren’t has it), title screen and all. What is the most obscure OCEAN game that comes to mind?
