(1/2) We congratulate our team member Beatriz Portinha on the successful defense of her PhD thesis last Friday in the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki. We wish you all the best for your future!
(1/2) Last week, the EGB team took part in FCUL’s Open Day 2026!
For another year, we helped bring science closer to school students through hands-on activities, that walked visitors through the journey from the field to data simulation! 🐟📊

(1/2)🎓The EGB group congratulates our team member João Moreno on the successful defence of his PhD thesis “Uncovering the molecular basis of adaptation in species distributed along a climatic gradient: linking genomes and proteins to environment”. We wish João continued success!
(1/2)📌New paper out in @Ecol_Evol!
Funded by the European Proteomics Infrastructure Consortium (EPIC-XS), our team used a TMT labeling proteomics approach to study impact of climate change on the endangered Mira chub (Squalius torgalensis).🐟

(2/2) We also identified potential molecular markers that can be important for monitoring this species in a changing world.
This work was part of the PhD of João Moreno in collaboration with Romana Santos from

📣 Our new paper just came out in The American Naturalist! @ChicagoJournals
Are DMIs actors or simple markers of the speciation process with gene flow?

(1/2)🎓The EGB group congratulates @sofialmendes on the successful defence of her PhD thesis entitled “The role of hybridization in speciation and adaptation: insights from Iberian freshwater fish species” held last Thursday at @cienciasulisboa.
We wish Sofia continued success!
(1/3)📢New paper out in @molecology!
📎 Available at: doi.org/10.1111/mec.70009
By combining a broad sampling of the different Iberian Squalius species across the Iberian Peninsula with whole genome sequencing, we uncovered multiple cases of hybridization between species.
(2/3) These cases span from ancient hybridization events impacting entire species to more recent localized events restricted to small streams.
@CE3CResearch @cienciasulisboa
(3/3) This work is part of @sofialmendes PhD thesis, in collaboration with our colleagues Silvia Perea and Ignacio Doadrio from @mncn_csic , Philine Feulner from @EawagResearch and Carla Sousa Santos from @MAREscience.

(1/2) Yesterday, FCUL welcomed high school students and teachers to the Open Day 2025!
Our team joined with a hands-on activity that walked visitors through the journey from the field to data simulation! 🐟📊

(1/2) We congratulate our team member @_efaustino for the defence of his MSc dissertation entitled: “Unravelling Hybridization Dynamics of Iberian Chubs Through Demographic Modelling”.🐟
(1/2) Happy World Water Day! 💧🌎
Today, March 22, we celebrate the World Water Day!
This day aims to raise awareness about the importance of the preservation and sustainable management of freshwater resources.
