I understand why Barcelona are interested in Martรญnez.
Heโs left-footed, aggressive, technically gifted and comfortable playing out from the back. His profile fits several demands of Hansi Flickโs football.
But fitting the system isnโt the same as solving the problem.
Barcelona need a centre-back who can stand up to Europeโs biggest attackers, defend aerial threats, protect the space behind a high line and remain available throughout the season.
Martรญnez has qualities, but his height and injury record raise legitimate questions.
So I donโt want us to confuse a potentially attractive transfer opportunity with the right defensive signing.
Are Barcelona identifying the defender who will make this defence stronger, or simply the one who fits their financial situation?

Maxence Lacroix's injury couldn't have come at a worse time. Xabi Alonso is still experimenting and trying to fix a backline that's been leaking goals since the season started. Now he has another problem to deal with. It'll be interesting to see whether Fofana or whoever steps into that position can actually do a better job.
