Today, on March 2, 2025, we celebrate 100 years of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation! 🎉 A foundation born from a deep commitment to democracy and established at the request of Germany's first democratically elected president — Friedrich Ebert.

A just transition only works if no one is left behind. 🌍
Just transition should not be empty words. It has to serve workers and their communities.
Trade unions and experts are discussing how to protect workers and strengthen communities across the Western Balkans.
Thanks to the colleagues from @FES_SEE_Sarajevo, ETUC and everyone taking part. 👇

A #JustTransition needs more than policies. It needs solidarity among workers and communities, and cooperation across borders and institutions.
Together with @etuc_ces and @FESJustClimate, we're discussing how to make the transition as just as possible in the Western Balkans.

The #CivilSocietyForum has concluded, but the debate on the future of the #BerlinProcess continues.
Our new analysis of 29 official documents (2014–2025) finds a clear shift: security is increasingly reframing the agenda itself.

🔐 From borders to cyber, energy & economic security: the Berlin Process security agenda has expanded considerably since 2014.
Our new analysis maps this evolution & asks how 🇪🇺 & the #WesternBalkans can keep security from crowding out other topics.

🇪🇺 Enlargement is more than a geopolitical tool.
At #Alpbach, we brought the social dimension into the debate: Europe’s attractiveness also depends on whether people feel progress in decent work, education, healthcare and social protection.

FES Southeastern Europe Regional Office | Sarajevo retweeted
At the European Forum #Alpbach, the question of the past weeks was how Europe wins.
🇪🇺 #enlargement ran through much of the past couple of days. Since 2022, under geopolitical pressure, the 🇪🇺 has turned back to enlargement as a tool to protect itself and advance its interests. 🇺🇦 and 🇲🇩 are candidates in accession talks; there is serious talk of 🇲🇪 joining by the end of the decade. Much of it framed enlargement as an instrument against third actors: 🇷🇺’s invasion and hybrid war, and the influence of 🇨🇳 and even the 🇺🇸.
I sat down with Mirna #Jusić, Valentina #Ostojić and Berta #López #Domènech to test one point. Enlargement widens the single regulatory area, with free movement of goods, services, capital and labour. But does it also make people, in the countries joining and those already inside, feel the social side of their lives improving? Only then does Europe’s attractiveness actually work.
Mirna’s study on the social dimension of enlargement in the Western #Balkans looks beyond chapters and clusters to how everyday life changes, across labour markets, education, social protection and healthcare. The front-runners, 🇲🇪 and 🇦🇱, have made the most progress, but daily life has shifted far more unevenly than the paper progress suggests. Her conclusion: with better use of the process and better choices, much more is possible.
Thanks to the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung for the chance to dig into this with participants from across Europe and the world, something too often neglected when we talk about how Europe wins.

Across Southeast Europe, back in 2018, more than 88% of people said the gap between the rich and the poor was growing.
Eight years later, are these findings still shocking or have they simply become normal❓
Tell us what you see around you.

Across the region, migrant workers keep entire sectors running, yet they're rarely treated as part of the society they help build, and too often denied the same rights as everyone else.
Welcoming the people who help build our communities should never be radical❗️
Across Southeast Europe, fair pay and safe working conditions are increasingly treated as unrealistic demands, even as a burden on the economy.
So the question stands - when did dignified work become radical?🔗 soe.fes.de/news/when-did-dig…

Solidarity, equality and simply caring for one another.
The most human things we know, and somehow, they've started to sound radical to some.
So tell us, what does it look like from where you stand? What do you believe in that's now called radical?

Across 12 countries, our Youth Study Southeast Europe 2024 finds young people concerned but hopeful. Despite real worries about work and corruption, 79.3% still believe their government should ensure no one is left behind. What does that tell us about the decade ahead?
Somewhere along the way, believing everyone deserves dignity and a real voice started sounding radical. If standing for fairness is considered radical, then we're still radical and radically hopeful about what comes next 👉 shorturl.at/BM3Jp
