The hardest shift from XC to track?
Convincing runners that less work can make them faster.
They see fewer miles and think you’ve gone soft.
You see sharper paces and know they’re finally about to learn what FAST feels like.
XC is about surviving the grind.
Track is about weaponizing it.
We don’t drop volume to rest.
We drop volume to raise the ceiling.
Less dirt.
More danger.

This morning we ran our last tempo before Regionals.
You’d expect big speeches, fire, and “all the way to State” energy.
Nope.
It was quiet. Focused. All business.
3×1-mile @10k pace with 2' recovery.
Goals: hit your time, stay relaxed, share the lead, run by feel.
They nailed it.
Even splits. Smooth rhythm. Calm faces.
That’s the kind of confidence I trust—
not the kind built on hype,
but the kind built on evidence.
👉 Takeaway:
Confidence doesn’t come from “we can do this.”
It comes from we just did.

Coaching distance runners is a lot like maintaining a car.
You have to keep the transmission healthy.
Too many coaches train like they’re driving in 4th gear only—
great mileage, smooth hum… until the hill shows up.
Then it’s panic-shift city.
The best athletes can shift without thinking—
from 5k pace to 400m kick without the engine sputtering.
You don’t get that from perfect tempos.
You get it from touching every system often enough to keep it alive.
👉 Takeaway:
Don’t let gears rust just because it’s October.
Fast doesn’t fade when you keep it awake.

With XC practice gearing up, it's time to re-post this. Your high school track/XC career can be 25 days that changes your life if you'll let. For that to happen, you need to be willing to let it change you. One of the first things I wrote for MileSplit. ks.milesplit.com/articles/23…

I hope you high school track & field athletes are counting the rosters of those D1 schools that are recruiting you. And don’t forget the transfer portal isn’t even open yet. No NCAA roster limits in NCAA D2 and great competitiveness for athletes coming out of HS.
