What an unforgettable #Mission40 homecoming. Terminal 1 overflowed with pride and admiration as 60 @honorflightSFLA veterans returned to cheers, signs, and welcoming outstretched hands from every direction. Their stories represent service across multiple military branches and eras that shaped our country. To every U.S. veteran who served, thank you for your courage, sacrifice, and commitment. To the loved ones, volunteers, guardians, and supporters who helped create this #OperationHomecoming moment, we appreciate your efforts. @Southwest @AreasUSA Among the Mission 40 veterans were: • Three Purple Heart honorees: William Brown, U.S. Army/ Vietnam; Lionel Jones, U.S. Army/Vietnam; and David Scott, U.S. Army/Vietnam • Two Bronze Star recipients: Ira Diener, U.S. Army/Vietnam and Raymond Thomas, U.S. Army /Vietnam • Ralph (Dale) Boyles, U.S. Army/Korea and later at Fort Myer, VA; served as an organist at Arlington National Cemetery, playing for services honoring young Americans lost in Vietnam. • George Booth, U.S. Navy/Cuba during the Cold War; former associate editor for Naval Aviation News; today he publishes books/brochures for National Park sites. Tonight, we're gathering at #FLL in Terminal 1, lower level, to welcome some VIPs who deserve our respect and gratitude for their service to this country. The @honorflightSFLA's #Mission40 via @SouthwestAir is bringing home 60 veterans, ages 72 to 99, representing #WWII, #KoreanWar, #ColdWar, #VietnamEra, and #GulfWarEra. The lobby is full of well-wishers and loved ones with flags, handmade signs, and the excited sounds of “they're almost here." We're thrilled to announce the completion of "Wings of Freedom," a monumental new artwork by South Florida artist Ivan Roque, created to honor America's 250th anniversary. Painted on a non-operational training Boeing 727 aircraft parked near # FLL's North Runway, this symbolic public artwork celebrates the enduring human pursuit of liberty, using birds as timeless symbols of freedom and the American spirit. An exhibition featuring the artwork's making is on view post-security in the Terminal 3-4 connector walkway.
