The IDU is deeply concerned by the escalating unrest in #Albania, where student-led protests that began in #Tirana on October 13, 2026, have now spread beyond the capital. The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are cornerstones of every democratic society. The IDU calls on the Government of Albania and its security forces to refrain from the use of violence against protesters, to exercise maximum restraint and proportionality, and to respect the fundamental rights of every citizen. Reports of rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades being deployed against crowds largely made up of students are alarming. Any instances of excessive force must be investigated independently and transparently, and those responsible held to account. Read more here: idu.org/idu-statement-on-the…

The protests in Albania are a culmination of the people’s distrust of corrupt politicians and fatigue over the total disregard for the rule of law. Albania’s leaders need to heed the calls for substantive changes that will yield economic opportunity and foster regional stability.

I am deeply concerned by the escalating unrest in NATO Ally Albania. The Albanian people deserve the rule of law, accountable institutions, and the freedom to make their voices heard. All parties must reject violence, and the government must respect the rights of peaceful protesters. Albania’s young people deserve a voice in shaping their nation’s future.

Cardinal Ernest Simoni was clandestinely ordained a Catholic priest in Communist Albania, the first country to officially ban religion. On Christmas Eve 1963, after celebrating Mass for the repose of the soul of President John F. Kennedy, Simoni was arrested and sentenced to death for his "crime" of refusing to bow before the false altar of communism. His sentence was later commuted to 25 years of forced labor in the notorious Spaç Prison camp. Powered by his faith, Simoni endured his sentence, secretly celebrating Mass and hearing the confessions of fellow prisoners, risking execution if caught. VOC was truly honored to host Cardinal Simoni, a living martyr, at the Victims of Communism Museum.

Our meeting today with the main European Leader & freedom-fighter President @ZelenskyyUa #United4Ukraine
Today, I met with the delegation of the international parliamentary network United for Ukraine. I thanked them for their consistent political support of our country. This is very important now, during the war, and it will be no less important afterward. We all want a just and lasting peace. We discussed the future of Ukraine, security guarantees, and the outcomes of the meetings in Washington. Separately, we also focused on how frozen Russian assets can be used for Ukraine’s recovery. A united voice and a common position in Europe are of particular importance. I am grateful to the parliamentarians for their support and shared vision that Ukraine must be part of the European Union.

Wrapping up the #United4Ukraine delegation’s visit to Kyiv, we met with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine to discuss the latest developments in the path towards a just and secure peace in Ukraine. We discussed the outcomes of the recent Alaska summit and the meeting between President Zelenskyy, President Trump and European leaders in Washington. @ZelenskyyUa is right to prioritize strong security guarantees for Ukraine before negotiating a ceasefire, as Russia has no intention of peace. We must ensure Ukraine’s strength in this path towards achieving peace.
