People can debate the utility of LCOE all day long, but in my opinion the metric still delivers valuable info. And one thing is clear: wind and solar have a critical role to play in our energy system, along with gas, nuclear, geothermal, and more.
First bullet of the Lazard LCOE 2025: "On an unsubsidized $/MWh basis, renewable energy remains the most cost-competitive form of generation. As such, renewable energy will continue to play a key role in the buildout of new power generation in the U.S. This is particularly true in the current high power demand environment, where renewables stand out as both the lowest-cost and quickest-to-deploy generation resource"

The ERCOT fuel mix chart has been updated to include 2023!
A few thoughts:
- ERCOT is 40% carbon-free
- solar looking like wind circa 2010
- coal decline offset by wind + solar
- gas variability driven by gas prices
- wind & solar are not displacing gas at all

Renewable energy on the TX grid lowered the cost of electricity in the state by $11B in 2022, according to a report by energy systems analysis firm IdeaSmiths. Renewables have also saved TX customers ~$1,000 in electricity bills over the past 5 years…
