In the 2026 World Cup final, after Spain defeated Argentina, the losing team did something striking during the trophy presentation . As the Spanish players received their medals and lifted the World Cup, the entire Argentinian squad turned their backs. Not one of the players broke rank. Not one offered a clap, a handshake, or even basic acknowledgement of the winners. This is group think in its purest form. When shared disappointment and grievance take over, they create powerful social pressures. Individual judgement gets overridden by the desire to stay aligned with the group. What might feel unacceptable in isolation suddenly feels justified or even required. Especially when everyone else is doing it. The result? A collective act of pettiness that no single player may have initiated alone, but none felt able to resist. This is exactly how feelings hijack decision-making. The “we were wronged” narrative builds a false moral high ground that excuses poor behaviour and discourages self-reflection. It’s one of the most corrosive patterns we see today. Not just in sport, but in politics, workplaces, and online spaces. True strength isn’t refusing to lose gracefully. It’s having the independence to do what’s right even when the group is pulling the other way.
The saying
If you know you know
Is a bit fucking annoying.
Unless you’re an elitist self important type .. then it sums you up perfectly.
