But is it true? 🧵

Beenie Man has raised questions about a Beenie percent of the recovery spend: 2%. The amount dwarfs in comparison to the overall relief budget but the clarity must be given for the record.
There are persons who believe that the $1.7 Billion received in Donations should ALL be given in grants. That is okay.
The problem is that the Government has given more than the amount received in donations away in grants.
The ROOFS programme has close to 118,000 applications. That is less than $15,000.00 JMD per person if the $1.7Bn is handed out in grants. The Govt will be spending over $22 Billion Dollars on the ROOFS Programme alone. More than 10x the amount received in donations.
$500 Million was allocated to MSME's as grants. $192 Million in Agricultural Grants. This does not include the rehabilitation of schools, roads, clearing debris and rebuilding other infrastructure that was damaged including bridges and public services.
"The people who should get the money" is a gross misunderstanding of the relief programme. The $1.7Bn does not include the 2700+ container homes that are to be completed and installed.
The $1.7 Billion is approximately 2% of what is being spent on the relief and recovery process.
Just so we’re clear the UN vote on the Cuba embargo is symbolic and non-binding. It cannot force the US to end the embargo. US law governs what the US government can do here and the embargo is written into US law. Congress would have to act to fully lift it.

Today, Wednesday, October 28, marks one year since Hurricane Melissa, the most devastating hurricane to strike Jamaica in recorded history.
The Category Five storm made landfall near New Hope, Westmoreland, on October 28, 2025, with sustained winds exceeding 185 miles per hour and gusts topping 200 miles per hour.
Melissa left a trail of destruction, devastating communities, destroying homes and disrupting livelihoods, particularly in St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Manchester, St. James, Trelawny and Hanover.
One year later, many Jamaicans are still grappling with the aftermath, raising questions about the pace of recovery and rebuilding efforts.
On the Front Page this morning we will revisit the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, examine the progress made and highlight the challenges that remain.
We start with events before the hurricane made landfall.

So the government must just dash out taxpayers’ money to people who can’t even produce proper identification?
What happened to accountability

It’s a shame when politics blinds people to the point that they go on the international stage to spread misinformation. He could have simply said, “People are receiving help, but more needs to be done, and it needs to happen faster.” Simple!

A day after Hurricane Melissa ripped through Jamaica’s western parishes, a steady procession of vehicles carrying relief supplies and aid headed west to assist devastated communities.
The Nationwide News team was among those making the journey, and one thing became immediately clear, the landscape had been transformed beyond recognition.
Aid and relief supplies from across the country converged on Black River, St. Elizabeth, one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa.
Tauna Thomas was on the ground in St. Elizabeth in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. One year later, she returned to the parish to assess the progress of recovery and hear firsthand how residents are rebuilding their lives.

“Waste not, want not.”
Growing up in humble circumstances taught me the value of frugality, a principle I continue to apply in leading Jamaica.
As we fund critical priorities, including the $9.65 billion ROOFS Programme, we must make difficult choices about government spending. Every dollar must be used wisely, with clear priorities and careful management of the people’s money.
We cannot do everything at once, but we must ensure that the needs of Jamaicans, especially families recovering from Hurricane Melissa, remain at the centre of our decisions.

Jamaicans have expressed mixed reactions to a proposal by the National Security Council (NSC) to increase the mandatory minimum sentence for gun crimes from 15 to 20 years, with some welcoming the move as a crime-fighting measure while others believe the penalty is too harsh.

One of the lessons from Hurricane Melissa is the need for a reliable system to identify and verify people receiving recovery assistance.
During the initial relief effort, we provided assistance based on humanitarian need. As we move through recovery, we must also ensure that every grant and benefit reaches the person it is intended to help.
This is why I am encouraging everyone seeking assistance through the recovery process, including grants under the ROOFS programme, to register under the National Identification System (NIDS). Having a reliable way to verify who is receiving assistance will help us prevent duplication, protect public resources and ensure that support reaches those who need it.
We know that every family waiting for assistance wants to be treated fairly, and having a reliable identification system will help us do that.
