📢 Publication Alert 📢 doi.org/10.2166/ws.2024.127
Our paper on the analysis of 1,696 communities across three Nigerian states is published! 🌍💧
Using an integrated methodology combining Borehole Functionality Trajectory Analysis, Geospatial Analysis, Spearman’s Rho Correlation Analysis, Technical Diagnostic Analysis, and Ownership Pattern Analysis, our research provides a first-time understanding of the entire lifecycle of borehole functionality—from operational effectiveness to eventual abandonment—and the intricate technical and socio-economic conditions influencing it
We established that state-wise multidimensional poverty indices do not fully explain water challenges and infrastructure deficits in communities. Therefore, we propose community mapping to address extreme water poverty.
To action our findings, we will collaborate with the Nigeria Federal Ministry of water resources to map the entire country, aiming to achieve UN SDG 6.1 for all Nigerians.

Water poverty and poverty are intricately linked. The struggle to access clean water directly contributes to and intensifies the cycle of poverty.
When communities lack clean water access, it's not just about health. It affects earning a living, maintaining hygiene, and achieving educational goals.
This lack of access leads to increased healthcare costs and time lost from work or school, deepening the poverty trap. It's a complex cycle where each issue perpetuates the other.
We encourage governments and NGOs to consider the findings in our recent publication on water infrastructure sustainability (doi.org/10.2166/wp.2023.173) when crafting solutions for water poverty in developing countries. This research highlights the importance of sustainable, long-term planning in water management to effectively address both water poverty and general poverty.

Unveiling Progress: An Update on Our Smart Water Infrastructure Pilot Project
Greetings to Change Makers and Global Citizens:
Today marks a significant milestone as we unveil our pilot project: "Smart Water Infrastructure - Bridging the Water Gap and Addressing Sustainability Challenges with Data-Driven Intelligence". This venture is an exciting chapter in our research and development initiatives, contributing significantly to our overall endeavour of achieving the global goal of clean water for all.
Project Overview:
Commencing with Nigeria, our innovative project is engineered to revolutionise water access in the developing world. At the core of our initiative is the Target 6.1 Map (target6.1map.management/), a pioneering mapping and data management system that informs the strategic positioning of our Smart Water Kiosks (SWKs).
Smart Water Kiosks:
These forward-thinking SWKs, fuelled by AI and IoT technologies, are projected to provide 20,000 litres of clean, affordable water daily, directly impacting 1,000 individuals per kiosk.
Data-Driven Monitoring and Maintenance:
Our approach to maintaining continuous water supply is proactive, thanks to real-time data-driven monitoring. This system ensures optimal kiosk performance, financial efficiency, and anticipates potential SWK failures, allowing for preventive measures that guarantee a steady water flow.
Project Budget:
A budget of $20 million AUD per annum has been proposed for this initiative, an investment that will be directed towards maximising our reach and efficiency. This forecasted budget underlines our commitment to making this project a success and signifies our readiness to take every necessary step towards its realisation.
Our Impact:
This project transcends the mere improvement of water access; it fundamentally redefines it. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, we're tackling persistent hurdles and laying the groundwork for a sustainable future where water resources are intelligently managed.
