0:34 It might look like Abde should do better to block the lane to Lamine, but Rodri’s body orientation sells the pass to Koundé, forcing Abde to commit and opening the lane behind him. Pau have this in his bag as well. Deceptive passing is an art.
In our last two games, we've seen some of our best press-resistance and build-up sequences in a long time. The fact that we managed to do this while playing with 10 men makes it 10x times more impressive.

Its gotten annoyingly common for wingers to have to run through like 2-3 people every other time they get the ball while the rest of the team sits back and watches them with 0 support

FT when you tell them work rate includes actually making runs forward and being in the right spaces instead of chasing defenses across the backline

Random memory watching this but: One of the main reasons why I knew Pedri and FDJ had the highest trajectories in their earliest years came down to how well they could match Messi's intuitiveness. The speed, first touch and technique they used to link up and move automatically in action created situations defenders simply could not prepare for. And it was beautiful: Like generating a "set play" as and when they wanted to escape any press or zone. Believe me, keeping up on the wavelength pre-action, during the action and post-action with Messi is as fast and hard as can be. Neymar, Iniesta, Xavi, Pedro were the very few who could. Go and watch back the '21 tapes of Messi's last season. The CDR final etc. Both deserved far more time kicking with Messi, but life works in funny ways.

Any fans of Be Blues out here? For any of the football fans who likes reading manga, I HIGHLY recommend reading Be Blues. Very inspirational, and there's a minimalism to the story that lets the ball do the talking. Also educational about individual tactics and decision making.

For a striker who liked and was good at getting on the end of chances, Lukaku was oddly good at final balls. There were games where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even used him as a RW. Though I suppose that if he knows what kind of passes he likes to receive, he'll give them back. IQ.

If Jesus is starting, I prefer Fermin 10 to compensate for missing out on Raphinha's gravity to stretch the back-line with Gordon LW to balance out composure on the ball. But I'm interested to play the double 10s of Fermin/Olmo, and if such I'd love the relentless Adeyemi at LW.
🚨🚨 JUST IN: Hansi Flick — “Raphinha does not have an injury, but we have to be careful because last year he had three injuries, and we need to take care of him. He won't be available tomorrow or against Galatasaray” #FCB ⛔️

Upon further reconsideration there's sooo many different combinations with these guys' versatility Yamal False 9 with Fermin behind him and Gordon/Adeyemi stretching the wings? Adeyemi at 9 as the most similar Raphinha/runner profile? Gordon at 9 to keep a 10 freshly benched?

I salute Militao and Rudiger's constant proactiveness for Real Madrid, both off and on the ball. It's no wonder they're incredibly injury prone now, lots of taxing work both physically and mentally.

After the attack/midfield disconnect, the responsibility of controlling the structure of the team IP falls onto the backline... .... who also have to face a dilemma between stepping up to maintain compactness, or track space in behind due to balls lost and lack of pressing

Real Madrid is a very fun case study about how synergistic football can be. Not in terms of tactical inferio/superiority, but how each player affects the whole team. Space-killing attackers -> transition focused passing routes/midfield personnel -> robust defensive unit
I'm very willing to bet that Madrid won't win another major trophy for 3 years. Poor squad building, injuries ravaging their spine, and another Galactico situation up front.

But if the space-killing attackers don't put in their off-ball shifts both IP or OOP, it forces the midfield to focus more on retentive football. Alas, that lack of possessional personality in midfield THEN creates a dilemma for the attackers to conduct the team in their stead.

I have fun watching Salah, Mane and Firmino finding space and receiving very tricky passes Ofc TAA and Robertson do very well to find the attackers in opportune spaces and transitions But to cushion those swerving passes into the net within 2 touches ON THE MOVE is world class

The timing of that metatarsal injury was just brutal. He was in phenomenal form heading into the 2018 World Cup. Getting injured only 3 months before the WC completely derailed his preparation. With him at full fitness, I firmly believe Brazil would've gone all the way

Development requires the ability to hold two uncomfortable ideas at once. I can love my country and still criticise it. I can support a player and question his performance. When football culture cannot tolerate that tension, emotion overwhelms learning.
