隣人に初めて手を触れられたとき、私はなぜ彼の部屋を訪ねたのか、一瞬で忘れてしまった。
私は28歳で、神戸の小さなマンションに一人暮らしをしていた。三宮駅の近くにあるファッションブティックで働き、毎晩ほぼ同じ生活を送っていた。仕事を終え、コンビニで夕食を買い、終電を気にしなくていい時間に帰宅する。
隣に住む蓮は、私とは正反対の人だった。落ち着いていて、自然に人を惹きつける魅力があり、いつ見ても高級な香水の広告から抜け出してきたような雰囲気だった。
隣同士に住んで4か月になるのに、私たちはまともに話したことさえなかった。
そんなある雨の木曜日、私のキッチンのシンクから水が漏れ始めた。

彼は何気なく言っただけだった。でも、彼が帰ったあとも、その表情がずっと頭から離れなかった。
その夜、私はベッドの中で、10分にも満たない会話を何度も思い返していた。
翌朝、スマートフォンにメッセージが届いた。
蓮：「シンクは直った？ それと、もっと大事なことだけど、僕に会うための別の理由は見つかった？」
私は画面を見つめ、自分でも驚くほど笑顔になっていた。
そして、思いつく限り大胆な返事を打った。
「今夜、うちに来て。教えてあげる。」
