I genuinely hate the fact that government steals so much from us and them proceeds to waste most of that enforced generosity. Worse that absolutely nobody inside the state gives a fig about their rapacious immoral money grabbing.
I read a piece in the FT this week about the price of being middle class in Britain now and it said a couple earning £436,000 combined take home £216,000. That’s a crazy amount of tax, and it doesn't include VAT on purchases, council tax, stamp duty or other taxes (I think does include pension contributions). I can’t stop thinking about it.

We have had a 10 year hissy fit from the elite and lanyard class after the Brexit vote that people they consider their intellectual, social and moral inferiors vote against them. Politics since has just been continual punishment beatings.

Solving problems in industry 8 Steps. This is what I was trained in nearly 40 years ago. Step zero - prepare Step 1 - form a team with the required skills Step 2 - describe the problem Step 3 - implement containment actions (actions to protect the customer) Step 4 - determine root cause Step 5 - develop and select permanent corrective actions Step 6 - implement and validate corrective actions Step 7 - prevent recurrence Step 8 - recognise the team Is there anything like this in government?

How could this have been foreseen? They should be harshly punished before it gets too embedded.
Cyclists are continuing to ride along the newly pedestrianised section of Oxford Street, despite being asked to dismount. Around seven security staff have been stationed near Oxford Circus, calling out to cyclists to get off their bikes, with mixed success. What’s worse: “unfunded” tax cuts, or tax increases that don’t bring in extra revenue but harm the economy?
What is @KemiBadenoch’s new big idea? Exactly the same as the Conservatives’ old big idea: unfunded tax cuts. It’s the lack of imagination as much as the fiscal incontinence that stands out torstenbell.substack.com/p/k…

Domestic resilience. But not national resilience. #Rosebank
The government has published - without fanfare - new advice for all households on how to be ready for emergencies, which includes stockpiling enough food and water for three days. Defence and security editor @haynesdeborah gives her analysis on the campaign's launch ⬇️ news.sky.com/story/be-ready-…

Anyone here have a baby and a good sized dog? How do you fit the baby, the dog and the baby buggy in your car? My son is looking for a new car, needs to make sure he can fit all three in it.

The new gas field isn’t going to bring down your bills. Gas is bought & sold globally, so the reality is, fossil fuels controlled by dictators have Britain in a chokehold til we fully embrace gas-free driving & heating and cut the link between electricity and gas. BUT, fwiw, getting gas locally is still the right move while we’re transitioning off it. It’s a bit cleaner and brings jobs and tax revenue to Britain.

To reach fossil-free UK energy use (no oil or gas for energy) by the 2050 net-zero target: • Replace remaining fossil electricity generation with nuclear and/or renewables. • Replace oil and gas boilers primarily with heat pumps (plus some heat networks). • Replace ICE road vehicles with electric alternatives Further electrify trains. For ships, use electric options on short routes and alternative low-carbon fuels for larger vessels. Electrify most industrial gas and oil heat uses , with synthetic or other low-carbon options for remaining high-temperature processes. • Add sufficient new electricity generation for these loads: demand is projected to rise from ~280–300 TWh today to roughly 570–700 TWh by 2050 (about 2–2.5×), plus major transmission and distribution grid upgrades. • Build long-duration storage for dunkelflaute periods (multi-day to multi-week low wind/solar events). Batteries cover hours; long-duration needs are tens of TWh, supplemented by demand flexibility, interconnectors and firm low-carbon generation. This is a whole nation £5 Trillion project. We are way behind on most aspects of this plan targeting 2050. Jackdaw is a drop in the bucket in comparison. In the crisis the chancellor is facing it brings a few £billion into the treasury instead of giving it to Norway or Qatar. So it’s handy, but won’t change much.

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when Miliband found out about this.
In the middle of an energy crisis, homegrown gas has a role to play in our energy security as we transition to net zero. We’ll also invest North Sea revenues in renewables and other low-carbon projects. My interview on @SkyNews this morning on the decision to approve Jackdaw.

What’s the betting Andy green lights Jackdaw and blocks Rosebank as a compromise position. Trying to please everyone, but actually pleasing no-one.

So I strayed off thinking socialists were just dim. After all if they were bright, they’d figure out that socialism has never worked and never will. Then I was told by @s8mb that they aren’t stupid, they are just mistaken. Ok, seems fairer, and you do meet some lefties who are genuinely intelligent people. Then I found the work of Kahan and Boyer and read that they are subconsciously eliminating stories they don’t like, called Identity Protective Cognition. A psychological explanation, that everyone can be susceptible to. To sum up my current thinking on socialism. It’s a mental illness.

Is Cadwalladr suggesting that The Joos secretly run the BBC? That what the left usually means when they say “does anyone see the problem”

It’s jolly interesting now that X posts tweets onto my timeline from all over the world, with instant AI translation. Great to see different things happening in different countries, and the same things. Great to connect with non English-speaking foreigners.
