Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon on Friday in the room set up on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office.
Several members of Gemelli's medical and nursing staff attended the Mass, along with members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps.
"In his homily, the Pope thanked all the staff—doctors, nurses, and orderlies—for the work they do every day caring for patients in their frailty, and especially for what they have done and continue to do for him," read the statement.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

Thanks be to God for a wonderful keeping of our Patronal Festival yesterday. St Matthew pray for us!

It is beyond depressing that at no point in this £200m+ project did anyone ask: "shall we try and make it look nice?"

A short rail bridge over a two-lane road in Oxford took longer to build and cost more (inflation-adjusted) than some of the most famous construction projects in history

The Chair along with Frs Joseph, Smith, Caster and Morrison visited the Shirley Cripps Home at Mapfumo then moved on to the Tariro House in Harare. Tonight they entertained The Rev’d Canon Luke Chigwanda and Mrs Luke Chigwanda to dinner.

Fr Naylor is at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Gweru with some priests from the UK. On Thurs they hosted a teaching day culminating in a @ShrineOLW Liturgy. Fr Smith dedicated a new image of OLW. FSJ has been supporting the building of a daughter house in Tanzania this year.

We had a great keeping of the Assumption. Mass was followed by a procession of the image of Our Lady of Walsingham which we are gifting to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit at Gweru, Zimbabwe. Ave, Ave, Ave Maria!

The Scottish island of Iona, since the time of St.Columba (563 AD), has been one of most significant religious sites in Europe. Because of its solitude and spiritual significance, Iona is where the former Labour Party leader, John Smith, asked to be buried.
To erect, nearby, 91 wind turbines, 1000 feet high, taller than the Eiffel Tower and four times higher than Westminster’s Big Ben, would be an act of desecration and show no regard for the significance and beauty of Iona.
Scottish Power should go back to the drawing board.

There are no nice college buildings in Oxford built since clergy ceased to be in the majority on governing bodies. This is an unassailable principle.

Fr Naylor and eighteen members of the congregation gathered together for an aperitivo hour tonight and reflected on the life of St John Bosco. We also noticed the mirroring of Fr Ommanney’s mission here as “the people’s priest” with that Turin’s “father of the poor”.

The Church of England is sending £100 million overseas for slavery “reparations”.
Meanwhile our parish churches - our national inheritance - are crumbling.
This is gesture politics - and it’s theologically nonsensical.

The bloodstained vestments of Fr Jacques Hamel, martyred at the altar in the church of Saint-Etienne-de-Rouvray on this day ten years ago. Pray for us!
Dans l’église de Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, pour la première fois est exposée l’aube maculée du sang du père Jacques Hamel, assassiné ici-même il y a 10 ans. Son étole est déposée sur la croix, près de l’autel. @DioceseRouen @FChretienne

Bishop Rowan Williams has been a champion for the Religious Life and has himself been deeply formed by the monastic tradition. We are delighted that he will be joining us for the 160th celebration in Oxford, and that he has agreed to be our preacher for the Mass of thanksgiving.

2026 marks 160 years since Frs Benson, Grafton & O’Neill took vows of celibacy, poverty & obedience and thus founded the Society of St John the Evangelist. Next Saturday, as the successor charity, we will be back in Oxford to give thanks for their continuing legacy. Pray for us!

If that is not indicative of the state of the country I do not know what is.

So much for standing up against Russia. We pay them for oil we could drill for ourselves, so they can buy weapons to fight Ukraine, that we fund to buy weapons to fight Russia! Make it make sense?

Last night Ed Miliband whipped his MPs to vote against our motion to save the North Sea and British refineries.
He argued Labour’s plans to kill British production was ‘climate leadership.’
Meanwhile he was waiving sanctions on Putin’s oil.

BREAKING: UK waives some Russian oil sanctions, allowing imports of diesel and jet fuel processed in third countries from Russian crude
(most likely supply chain: imports of Indian refined products produced by processing Russian crude).
