CHIP variants are often discovered incidentally in liquid biopsy testing, but is plasma cell-free DNA reliable when CHIP variants are the desired finding? 🩸@BloodAdvances @AlexBickMDPhD 🧵1/12

Excited to share this paper in @BloodAdvances led by @brettheimlich, @PBdoingscience & @alyssa_c_parker with @FerrellLabVUMC that uses mitochondrial lineage tracing techniques pioneered by @vangalenlab @CalebLareau, @bloodgenes to identify transcriptional consequences of #CHIP
Ever wondered how the two most common CHIP mutations affect gene expression in human PBMCs? Our recently published paper addresses this question using mitochondrial DNA lineage tracing. doi.org/10.1182/bloodadvance…

One of the biggest surprises in studies of clonal hematopoiesis has been how few mutations are in classical oncogenes and tumor suppressors. Instead, the majority of mutations are in "epigenetic" factors. Why? This is a mystery that has perplexed me for >10 years.
