⚠️ The Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) 🇪🇹 carried out a drone strike this morning on civilians who had gathered to collect grain from a truck in the town of Rama, in the Tigray region. The strike killed at least 14 civilians and left dozens more seriously injured.

Ethiopia received ~€244m in Irish bilateral aid from 2020–2025. It’s just received a delivery of 12 Russian Su-35 fighters & plans to acquire four S-400 air defence system, again from Russia. Should Irish taxpayers be funding aid to countries buying advanced Russian weaponry?
Ethiopia has taken delivery of 12 Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets and will later receive four S-400 air defence systems from Moscow as part of a drive to bolster its military capabilities, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Wednesday. reuters.com/world/africa/eth…

Pope Leo prays for Ethiopia's Tigray region. In his remarks at the General Audience, the Pope appealed to all parties to cease hostilities, noting that “only honest engagement can lay the foundations for lasting peace.” The situation in Tigray is deteriorating considerably. In recent hours, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Tigray Defense Forces (TDF) have intensified their clashes with the Ethiopian army. Numerous skirmishes have been reported along the Tekeze River in western Tigray, in the Wolkayt area on the border with the Afar region, and in various parts of Amhara.

I see @ACLEDINFO is employing a unique definition of "war" which it mysteriously only applies to Ethiopia.
Is #Ethiopia at war again? Not yet. But the situation is becoming increasingly fluid. In this emergency episode of Conflicts of Interest, Prof. Clionadh Raleigh and ACLED's East Africa Analyst explain why Ethiopia is not yet at the level of the 2020–2022 war, but why the shifting alliances and support networks need close attention. Tigray capital Mekelle 'out of cash' as fighting escalates in Ethiopia - the world has blind spots when it comes to atrocities and the danger of more in Africa. This report from the BBC is a wake up call @Ed_Miliband bbc.co.uk/news/videos/cvj643…

Difficult to see the US playing a mediation role in Ethiopia given statements like this.
U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin J. Massinga’s Statement on Recent Developments in Tigray and Afar: “I am disappointed to see the leadership of the TPLF, that the United States sanctioned earlier this year, make the poor decision to launch a large-scale offensive today. Rejecting dialogue sponsored by the AU under President Obasanjo and engaging in an unwinnable fight does nothing for the people. Other armed groups would be wise to avoid this. While the U.S. has tools to sanction additional leaders who try to push Ethiopia down the wrong path, I still believe a reasonable political dialogue is the right way to go.” et.usembassy.gov/statement-o…

News: #World_Bank_supported school #ICT center destroyed in latest #drone_strike in #Tigray A secondary school in Saharty Woreda, Tigray, has been hit by a drone strike that destroyed an ICT facility equipped with 35 computers installed this year through the World Bank-supported 3R program, according to Kiros Guesh (PhD), head of the Tigray Education Bureau. “Drone strikes by Federal Government of Ethiopia hit a secondary school in Tigray at Saharty Woreda, destroying ICT facilities with 35 computers installed this year by the World Bank supported 3R program,” Kiros said. The latest destruction of a school adds another layer to an education system that the Tigray Education Bureau earlier has warned is already struggling to recover from the devastating consequences of the war. “Serving 500+ students since 1999 E.C., this vital hub now lies in ruins,” Kiros said. addisstandard.com/?p=59063

It's admirable for #AfricanUnion to condemn injustice. Maybe when they're done fixing the problems around the world, they will start looking at their own continent and condemn injustices in Africa, including the places where they meet.

Près. Trump deserved the #NobelPeacePrize for stopping the carnage in Gaza. The corrupt Norwegian Committee has previously awarded the prize to individuals accused of a genocide. #Trump didn't start a major war but halted one. Maybe that's what made the committee unhappy.

Are you practicing Orwellian rewriting of history? @CrisisGroup @hrw and @amnesty
For those interested, it’s important to know that many reports about the Tigray genocide have been deliberately removed from the internet. This erasure seems intended to downplay the extent of Tigray’s suffering and to undermine the calls for justice regarding the genocide. 1/7

Vendre des armes à des régimes peu recommandables en Afrique de l'Est aura le même résultat qu'en Afrique de l'Ouest. La France devrait réévaluer sa façon de mener ses affaires en Afrique avant de perdre toute sa bonne réputation. @AmbafranceET

Today Tigray marks 4 years since the liberation of Mekelle by the TDF during Operation Alula Abanega, a decisive counteroffensive that turned the tide of the war on Tigray. The day is remembered as a moment of defiance, unity and a historic victory against overwhelming odds.
