SHE CONFESSED BEFORE I FOUND OUT
I’m 33, and my wife confessed to having an affair on an ordinary Wednesday night.
There was no dramatic discovery. No suspicious phone call. No message that appeared on a screen at the wrong time.
She came home from work, put her bag down, and asked if we could talk after the children went to bed.
I’d heard those words before, usually before a conversation about money or family problems.
This time, she looked frightened.
She told me she’d been seeing someone from work.
It had started as conversations, then lunches, then something she knew she should have stopped.
She said it had been going on for four months.
I asked whether it was still happening.
She said yes.
I remember looking at the clock because I needed to know whether I had enough time to put the children’s uniforms in the washing machine before going to bed.
That detail sounds strange, but life doesn’t stop to accommodate bad news.

I've made fireworks for the village festa in Żebbuġ for twenty-eight years. My workshop is a stone shed behind my house, and my hands smell of sulphur all summer.
Every year, at the festa, I noticed the same small boy. He was about eight, and he stood at the very back of the square, with both hands pressed flat over his ears.
He never came closer. At the first bang, his whole body flinched. By the time the big shells went up, he'd be gone, and I'd see only the back of his red jumper disappearing down the side street.
For three festas, I watched him leave. I spent weeks building the finale of my life, a shell that opens like a golden chrysanthemum over the church, and he never saw a single one.
This year, I decided to follow him. I handed my lighter to my nephew, slipped away from the launch site and found the boy sitting alone on a doorstep three streets away.
He wasn't crying. He was staring up at the sky between the rooftops, where the colours were flashing, with his fingers still jammed in his ears. And on his face was the saddest look I've ever seen on a child...

ONE NIGHT, TWO RULES
“Two rules,” Vanessa said, leaning against the bedroom door.
Adrian loosened his tie and raised an eyebrow. “I’m listening.”
“No lying.”
“Agreed.”
“And no falling in love.”
He smiled slowly. “That second rule might be a little late.”
Vanessa laughed. “You’ve known me for three hours.”
“And you’ve been distracting me for all three.”
She stepped closer, wearing his oversized white shirt over her dress. She had borrowed it after spilling wine on herself at dinner, and now she seemed determined to make him regret ever offering it.
“Are you always this confident?” she whispered.
“Only when I’m nervous.”
That caught her off guard.
“You’re nervous?”
“Vanessa, you walked into my apartment, stole my shirt, drank the last glass of my expensive wine, and told me my cooking tasted like hospital food.”
“It did.”
“And somehow, I’m still hoping you’ll stay.”
Her smile softened.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she reached for his tie, gently pulling him closer.
“You talk too much, Adrian.”
“Would you prefer I stop?”
“Completely.”
He understood.
Their kiss began slowly, almost playfully, until the teasing gave way to a tension neither of them had managed to hide all evening.
When he drew back, she rested her forehead against his.
“Still nervous?” she whispered.
“Terrified.”
“Good.”
She kissed him again.

I've been a gardener at a cemetery in Luxembourg City for twenty years. Most of my work is hedges, gravel and the odd fallen branch.
Every Tuesday at 8 AM, a woman in a blue raincoat came with a small green watering can. She walked straight past the new graves, past the old ones, and stopped at a plain stone near the east wall. Tom Weber, 1998 to 2019.
She watered the pansies, pulled a few weeds and stayed for exactly ten minutes. Then she left.
I knew every family in that section, and nobody called Weber had ever mentioned her. I assumed she was a friend, or an old teacher.
But one Tuesday in March, I was trimming the hedge behind the stone when I saw something I wasn't meant to see. She put the watering can down, took off her glove and pressed her bare hand flat against the stone. Then she shut her eyes, and her lips began to move in a slow, steady rhythm, as if she were counting...

I'm 29, and my boyfriend, Daniel, is 31. From the beginning of our four-year relationship, I had been honest about one thing: I never wanted children.
I loved spending time with my nieces and nephews, but motherhood was never part of my plans. I also had a hormonal condition and injuries from a childhood accident that made pregnancy potentially dangerous.
Daniel knew everything about my health and my decision. In fact, he was the one who initially said he didn't want children either. We had discussed permanent birth control together, so I believed we wanted the same future.
Five years earlier, when I was 24, I had unexpectedly become pregnant despite using contraception. My then-boyfriend and I agreed that an abortion was the right decision. Unfortunately, I experienced complications that further increased the risks of pregnancy.
We decided to keep the experience private. I wasn't ashamed of what happened, but I didn't believe everyone I dated needed to know my entire medical history.
I kept journals documenting my life, never imagining anyone would read them without permission.
Then, one evening, Daniel asked whether I had ever imagined becoming a mother.
I told him honestly that I hadn't.
He reminded me how well I got along with children and asked what I would do if we accidentally became pregnant.
I explained that I would make the decision based on my wishes and health.
He went quiet.
The following evening, I returned home to find him furious. He had searched through my personal journals while I was at work and discovered the account of my abortion.
He accused me of deceiving him and insisted my previous boyfriend must have forced me into the procedure.
When I explained that the decision had been mine, he refused to believe me. He even punched the bathroom door while shouting that I had lied about my medical condition.
I stood there shocked, wondering how the man who had always supported my decision could suddenly behave this way.
I still loved him, but for the first time, I felt afraid of his anger.

Three weeks ago, my wife asked me to stop calling her after work. I thought she was just stressed about her recent promotion. I never imagined that by the end of those three weeks I'd discover she had feelings for another man and had been quietly questioning our six year marriage.
At first, the changes were small. She worked late more often, spent more time on her phone and seemed less interested in talking about her day.
One evening, I called to ask if she wanted me to bring home dinner.
She rejected the call and texted me.
Wife: "Please stop calling me every evening. I'll let you know when I'm coming home."
I thought it was unnecessary but I didn't argue.
A few days later, she asked if I thought we spent too much time together.
Me: "We're married. Isn't that the point?"
Wife: "Sometimes I feel like I don't have a life outside this marriage."
I told her to take whatever space she needed.
That Friday, she went out with her coworkers and returned shortly after midnight. When I asked about the evening, she said everyone had enjoyed themselves and went straight to bed.
The following week, I heard her speaking on the phone in the hallway.
"I told you I'd call when I was alone," she whispered.
When I asked who she was talking to, she said it was a colleague. Then she accused me of questioning everything she did.
I let it go but something about her answer bothered me.
A few days later, she left an important folder at home. I knew she needed it for work so I drove to her office to drop it off.
Near the entrance, I saw her standing with a colleague I'd met once before. They were laughing at something on his phone. He reached up and adjusted her jacket collar and she smiled at him.
It might have looked innocent if she hadn't immediately stepped away when she noticed me.
I handed her the folder. She introduced us briefly and he greeted me politely before leaving.
My wife barely looked at me.
That evening, I asked her directly.
Me: "Is something going on between you and your colleague?"
Wife: "No. Why would you ask me that?"
Me: "You act differently whenever I ask who you're talking to. And you looked uncomfortable when I arrived at your office."
She became defensive.
Wife: "Nothing has happened between us physically so why are you acting like I've cheated?"
I hadn't mentioned anything physical.
Me: "Why would you bring that up if there's nothing going on?"
She looked away. After a long silence, she admitted they'd become closer than ordinary coworkers.
Wife: "I didn't plan for this to happen. I know I've let things go too far."
When I asked what she meant, she finally admitted she'd developed feelings for him.
Then she told me their closeness hadn't started recently. They'd been talking regularly for months.
And she'd been questioning our marriage before he'd ever confessed his feelings.

Sister: "You have cameras in your house? For a babysitter?"
Me: "Three. Front hall, kitchen, living room. There's a sign on the door, and Emma knows where each one is."
Sister: "She's sixteen, Dana."
Me: "And she's alone with my daughter."
Sister: "You should trust her."
Me: "I do. That's why I told her."
Sister: "That's not trust."
Me: "Maybe not. But it's honest."
Emma was in the next room, matching socks from the dryer. She leaned into the doorway with a sock in each hand.
Emma: "I actually like them. If something happens, there's a record. It protects me too."
My sister grabbed her coat and left without another word.
I stood in the kitchen feeling vindicated, which is a very small feeling.
Because that night, I did something I hadn't expected to do...

60 years ago my mother worked for somebody hella famous. Apparently she slept with him and that is why I exist. She then married the regular guy she was dating and told him I was his kid. DNA said otherwise. I do not tell people and I never will tell anyone except I do this, here, because I am not great at having secrets so this helps.
