🇫🇷Breguet Deux-Ponts.
Excerpt from a remarkable and charming promotional film directed by J. Gabriel Alby, dubbed into Spanish (Cannes Films - ecpa▶️d / FT 656).
The Breguet Deux-Ponts is a french cargo and passenger transport aircraft that was in service between 1953 and 1972. Its name comes from the fact that it can accommodate passengers on two decks rather than just one, as is the case with most aircraft of this type. It was the first in France to feature this design.
Design work on the Breguet 760 began in 1938, but World War II delayed its release. The project was based on the wings and tail units of the Breguet 730, a large seaplane built in 1938, which had proven highly satisfactory.
Development resumed after the Liberation of France under the designation Breguet 761, and in 1946 the preliminary design proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Air and approved by Minister Charles Tillon. He approved the launch of a prototype contract and, even before the prototype had flown, gave his approval in March 1947 for the manufacturer to produce 15 airframes.
Originally, Air France did not want this aircraft, the order for which was imposed on it by the French government, but upon discovering its many qualities—notably versatility, safety, reliability, and economy—the airline completely changed its mind about it.
The Breguet Deux-Ponts never caused any fatalities. The only two serious incidents on record were: an emergency belly landing (following a hydraulic failure) in a field near Lyon, but the aircraft, which sustained only minor damage and was repaired on site, was able to take off again (in less than 400 meters, with only the pilot on board and the aircraft lightened to the maximum) and then resume its regular service. The second incident occurred in Algeria on April 7, 1961, where a Deux-Ponts, the Air Force’s F-RAPA (an underpowered Br 761 prototype), veered off course during landing at Reggane due to a strong gust of wind and made a “soft” landing at night on rough terrain (left landing gear torn off): no injuries, but the aircraft had to be dismantled on site (the airframe and central wing remain).
A Breguet Br 765 is currently being restored by the Ailes Anciennes Toulouse association.
