some fundamental misunderstandings about the term stochastic parrot out there, parrots aren’t dumb and this term does not imply incompetence, it posits a lack of understanding
Replying to @kevinroose
both "stochastic parrots" and "it's all marketing hype" have been easily disprovable since about 2023 if you spend any time at all using AI. but many people (including some AI journalists!) never tried the tools out of some combination of fear, pride, and corporate IT policy. civilizational L.

mark kermode blocked me for making fun of his film socialisme review some years ago
Suddenly remembered the guy who got extremely mad at me for saying my favourite film of the 21st century thus far is Godard's Film socialisme. A cursory look at his replies showed a history of anger towards Godard. I wonder how he's doing today?

Guy who’s seen 10 Japanese movies: I like the samurai ones. Guy who’s seen 600 Japanese movies: This director started out making “bus groper films,” and they were really revelatory for the genre. Guy who’s seen 1000 Japanese movies: I like the samurai ones.

there aren’t many worse ways to see films than with a bunch of undergrads who’re forced to be there
this is a fun prompt: two movies a week for a 15-week semester, what are the 30 films every 18 year old should see?

My favourite film undergrad memory is definitely watching Tarkovsky's Mirror for Film History 101 with a soundtrack of at least a dozen loudly sighing freshmen every time the end of a shot wasn't the end of the film.
