🐋 What if we've been missing messages from intelligent life right here on Earth?
Humpback whales are famous for their underwater songs, but researchers are discovering that these remarkable animals also produce a surprising variety of sounds above the surface.
One of the most intriguing is the “thrum,” a powerful, low-frequency rumble that can travel remarkable distances through the air. Scientists are investigating when whales produce these sounds and what they might mean.
SETI Institute researchers are also exploring whether whale exhalations produce previously unrecognized electrical or magnetic signatures.
Why does this matter for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence? Because recognizing unfamiliar intelligence means questioning our assumptions about how communication works.
In a recent SETI Live conversation, Simon Steel spoke with Fred Sharpe, Isabel Gerrard, and Don Drury about the surprising science of whale communication and what it might teach us about listening for life beyond Earth.
