Tämänhetkisten tietojen perusteella Flydubai-lennon tapauksessa vaikuttaa olleen kyse mahdollisesta jihadistisesta terrori-iskusta, jossa on yhtäläisyyksiä 9/11-iskujen tapaan pyrkiä tuhoamaan siviililentokone.
Hyökkääjän motiivia ei ole vielä selvitetty, mutta teko näyttää kohdistuneen nimenomaan israelilaisia siviilejä kuljettaneeseen matkustajakoneeseen, mikä tekee tapauksesta erityisen vakavan.
Hyökkääjä yritti saada 174 ihmistä kuljettaneen koneen putoamaan. Katastrofi vältettiin vain matkustajien ja miehistön poikkeuksellisen rohkeuden ja kekseliäisyyden ansiosta.
