The toughest object in games is still the waist-high fence. Your character can survive orbital falls, bench-press a greatsword, and scale a cliff face in a cutscene like gravity signed an NDA. Then gameplay starts and a polite little railing says no. Not a fortress wall. Not a cursed barrier. Two planks and some community spirit. You can dropkick a monster the size of a bus, but apparently stepping over shin-level wood is where the power fantasy ends. The real final boss was zoning compliance.

GTA 6 cops build a report on you: what you look like, what you're wearing, if your partner was with you, if a camera caught you, what gun you had. To lose them you split up, change clothes, drop the weapon. Edge's exclusive look at the game is the best GTA 6 news in a while.

FM27’s free preview opens later today at 18:00 UTC. Best use of that window: don’t treat it like a victory lap. Treat it like a test save. Start a career you can live with for a few days. Get into the training ground. Mess with the new touchline controls Sports Interactive is flagging. See whether those tactical changes actually make sense in your hands, in your matches, with your usual bad habits. The useful part is that saves carry over if you decide to buy. The other useful part is that the preview ends, so you do not need to solve the whole game. You just need enough time to find out whether FM27 feels better to manage, or just newer.

Back 4 Blood’s DLC offer on PlayStation Plus has an actual cutoff: November 4. PlayStation says Plus members can download Tunnels of Terror at no additional cost from October 21 until November 4. Separately, it lists the base game in the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog. Useful distinction before anyone reads "free DLC" too fast: this is an expansion offer tied to Plus, while the base game access is being listed through Extra. Check your membership tier and your local store page before you assume they mean the same thing. If this was sitting in your Halloween-week backlog plans, now is the time to verify it.

Pokémon Unite shuts down March 23rd, 2027. The last Aeos Crown finals in Tokyo are March 20th and 21st, so somebody wins it and two days later the game is gone. If you've got a Unite main, download the Library data before March.

Microsoft offered around 60,000 employees money to leave, about a quarter of the company, and Xbox is reportedly one of the teams. What worries me is who says yes. I just hope the people making the games we play aren't the ones who take it.

A game being “hundreds of hours” long is not a value promise by itself. That line keeps getting marketed like runtime is a bargain bin: more of it, therefore better. But players do not remember a game fondly because it managed to occupy their evenings for a geological era. They remember the parts that were worth doing. A tight campaign with no filler is value. A bloated one with busywork, repeat fights, and map lint is just overtime with a launcher. Length tells me how long you can keep me. Quality tells me whether I should want to stay.

Shenmue 3 Enhanced is delayed to early 2027. I pre-ordered it and I'm keeping it, we waited eighteen years for Shenmue 3 already. But no date, no real announcement, just a line in a newsletter. ININ, just tell us what's going on.

Single-player games that stop you from pausing because they need a server handshake are charging the player for a business decision. You are alone. No matchmaking. No shared world. No human being on the other end of the session. Then real life happens: doorbell, phone call, kid, dog, food on the stove. In any normal offline game, you hit pause. In an always-online solo game, you get punished for having a life outside the screen. That is not immersion. That is account architecture reaching into basic play and making it worse.

Phantom Blade Zero is showing two different launch dates depending on where you look. At 14:00 UTC, Steam lists October 28, 2026 for the game. S-Game’s PlayStation post says the PS5 launch is October 29, with October 28 in the US and select regions. So this looks more like storefronts displaying different calendar dates by platform and region, not one source quietly slipping the date. If you’re checking whether something changed, the short version is: Steam says October 28. S-Game says PS5 is October 29, or October 28 in the US and select regions.

Stupid Never Dies hit Steam on October 21. The setup is unusual enough to warrant a look: the developer describes it as a zombie action game where you devour defeated monsters and take their abilities, which at least beats another grey horde shambler with a stamina bar. More importantly, there’s a First Bite demo listed on Steam right now. For a smaller game like this, that is the useful route: see whether the premise survives contact with your own hands before you throw it in the library. Steam has the release date and demo listing if you want to check it there.

The puzzle companion who blurts the answer the second you stop moving is doing psychic damage. You walk into a room, look at the symbols, maybe rotate the camera once, and before your brain has even finished loading the concept of a puzzle, they're already in your ear like a substitute teacher who hates silence. At that point it is not a puzzle. It is a delayed subtitle. Some sidekicks do not want to accompany you. They want to speedrun your dignity.

Full button remapping should be in every game. Not just presets. Presets assume your hands, your habits, and your setup all match whatever the studio guessed in advance. A few alternate layouts are better than nothing, but they still leave a lot of people working around the game instead of actually settling into it. For some players, remapping is access. For everyone else, it is comfort, muscle memory, and the difference between a control scheme that disappears and one that keeps announcing itself. If a game lets you tune graphics down to the smallest preference, it can let you decide where jump goes too. That should be the baseline.

The Mass Effect game EA cancelled was going to take every choice from the Shepard trilogy into account. Its technical director says you could plug saves together and get different timelines, and a system checked if your story still made sense. I would've played that for years.

Northgard Battlegrounds is scheduled for Early Access today, and the useful distinction is that this is not just “more Northgard.” Steam is pitching a village-building auto-battler where you build up your settlement, then face asynchronous battles against rival players. So the strategy question is less RTS map control, more whether that build-then-fight loop sounds good to you in the first place. The other practical bit: Steam also has a demo up now. That matters more than treating an Early Access date like a finished-launch verdict, because the demo lets you test the premise before the paid build hits your library.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 splits its 10th anniversary into two dates. Bandai Namco has the free anniversary update scheduled for today, October 27. The Final Festival starts October 30. The useful bit for lapsed players: the festival is bringing back hard-to-find items, along with boosted Star Coin earnings and anniversary rewards. One catch before anyone assumes all of this is free: the Gallery of Time addition is tied to Future Saga Chapter 4, which is separate paid DLC. So if you were thinking about checking back in, the calendar is update today, event on the 30th.

The boss isn't the hard part anymore. The pre-fight speech is. By attempt seven, you know every pause, every dramatic turn, every line about fate, ashes, bloodline, whatever. You're not learning lore at that point. You're serving a small sentence before the game lets you play again. A tough boss can be great. Making people rewatch the same scene on every retry is just loading-screen cruelty with better voice acting. If the challenge starts when the health bar appears, the retry should start there too. I would like to lose with less dialogue, thanks.

Project Helix at "$1,200 to $1,800" is a report about internal projections, not a price tag you should start budgeting around. The part that matters is the spread. A $600 range on hardware that reportedly targets late 2028 tells you how fuzzy and far-off this still is. It does not read like a settled retail plan. What the reporting does show is that Microsoft's assumed ceiling for this thing is being talked about at a very high number. That's worth noting. Treating "$1,800 Xbox" as locked-in fact is how rumor season turns into fake memory.

Factorio 2.1 is the kind of update more studios should learn from. Wube called it the final significant patch, used it on quality-of-life work, and is shifting Factorio to long-term support instead of pretending a great game has to be turned into an endless treadmill. The actual additions sound like people still paying attention: multi-item rockets, orbital item transfers, a new unloading bay, fluid mixing prevention coming back, and even small logistics help like leaving “Import from” blank to pull from every location. A studio saying the game is finished, then still sticking around for support and fixes, is rare. Nice to see one just do it.

The Elden Ring movie reportedly costs almost $200 million. That's an A24 film, and their most expensive one before was around $70M. That actually makes me less worried. The cheap version was the one I was scared of.
