Bringing formalin-preserved specimens back to life! 🧬🦎 Once thought to be DNA’s final resting place, these jars hold the secrets to past gene expression and adaptation.
Who said formalin was just a preservative? 🤔

Undergrads in my #genomics class presented their new genome sequencing competition proposals today. All proposed using @PacBio and @oxfordnanopore tech. I was impressed by their creativity! They have virtual 💰 to distribute to 'fund' their favorite proposals. Species include:
Great work @scales_genomics!!!
Had a great time talking conservation genomics and listening to some amazing talks at @theAGA_org 2024!
First day of 35th grade (I counted), and 6th year at @UCFBiologyDept. Welcome back students!
Yes! I've ben waiting for this ever since @erin_e_hahn gave a seminar to our department on museum #epigenomics!
The Epigenetic Time Machine has officially launched! Out today in Nature Communications - our chromatin profiles from century-old FIXED specimens! nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
A game-changer for museums! @erin_e_hahn @mralexandervir @c_frere @NicolaEKent
A great #WildlifeConservation #microbiome article by my unofficial MS Student @SA_Gaspar_ "What a waste: poop and plastic in the study of purple martin microbiomes the-microbiologist.com/featu…

Would love to host a #SmithFellow interested in genomics & Endangered Species Act implementation, perhaps with a special focus on bats. Reach out if interested :)
2025 @SmithFellows Request for Proposals Announced! Deadline is September 30, 2024. View the proposal guidelines here: conbio.org/mini-sites/smith-…
Happy World Snake Day🐍🌎🥳!!! But make sure to appreciate these splendid creatures every day! #WorldSnakeDay
Cool research ongoing by my PhD student Julianna!
What are magnetic bacteria 🧲🦠 and what do they do? 🤔
@UCF biologist Bob Fitak recently compiled a database of these unique organisms and the animals they reside in to determine their function & if they may help host animals navigate!

Check out the newest range map of Ro in Florida on the SLAM website. You can also find resources to learn more about Ro and report potential infections. invasionscience.ufl.edu/slam…. We have 2 additional northern counties not shown on this map, found just last week.

A short article I was interviewed for last week. So cool to see my photographs in the news!! sun-sentinel.com/2024/04/02/…
congrats!!!
I’m truly honored to win the Megan A. Fairlie Professor of the Year Award @FIULaw . It is an absolute privilege working with our incredible students.

So excited to have this out! Such a privilege to work with this amazing group of scientists; every single one of them was vital to making this happen! You never know what might be 'critical' in guiding evolution's paths!
It was a loonnnnnng time coming but our paper on path dependent evolution of visual systems is out in Science! @RebeccaMVarney @joie_cannon @Morris_Glr Dan Speiser Doug Eernisse.

I've been thinking about the transience of life, and you can't take it with you, so I'll be tweeting my own deep-sea photos about one-a-day for people to use however they want (just credit me). This is a sequence of the light emission of the shrimp Heterocarpus ensifer.
Where can you find magnetotactic bacteria? Check out our new database to find out. We mined >26 million datasets in NCBI and nearly 80 petabases of DNA to find out. We call it the "magneto-microbiome". #Bioinformatics #magnetoreception #microbiome

Just got reviews back on a paper I co-authored. One reviewer returned a 12-page review, complete with subheadings and 2 new figures. We appreciate all the time they spent.... but 12 pages... really?! BTW - the editor asked for a detailed line-by-line response. 🤣
