Comparison of Plab and USMLE:
I am receiving numerous inquiries regarding the comparison between USMLE and PLAB. Therefore, I would like to explain it in a single comprehensive post as I can write one long post with X premium.
1. USMLE is the United States licensing exam that makes you eligible to apply for training ( residency) in the United States. You can not work on USMLE without completion of training except in a few states, where they recently introduced a law where you can work for two years as a general practitioner if you have residency outside the United States. You will be issued a full license after two years of probation if your practice falls under the United States standards. You can directly work on PLAB in the United Kingdom.
2. USMLE is a long way for short training, while PLAB is a short way for lengthy training. Usually, USMLE takes up to 1 1/2- 2 years to get into the training, but once you get in here, training is swift, and in 3 years, you will be an attending physician. Meanwhile, in the U.K., becoming an attending physician takes a very long time.
3. You can earn a handsome amount as an attending physician but will be paid a tiny amount as a resident. In the U.K., you will be earning a good amount in training too, but unfortunately, there is not much difference between the salary of attending and registrar/house officer.
4. The U.S. healthcare system is private, mainly investigation-based medicine. The U.K. healthcare system is public and is examination-based chiefly. Therefore, practicing medicine is better and easier in the U.S. than in the U.K.
5. Life is hectic in the United States and a more workaholic environment compared to the U.K. In the U.S., paid maternity leave is up to 6 weeks, while in the U.K., it is up to 6 months.
6. The training is almost similar across the United States, but training in the United Kingdom depends on the hospital.
7. Last but not least, training in the United States will make you unfit for the whole world except the U.K., but training in the United Kingdom will make you fit for the world as a whole except the U.S.
Note: These are my observations and not the conclusion of any research project. Every individual has a different scenario in life. Therefore, choose wisely which is the best fit for you.
Have a good rest of the day, everyone.
Any feedback will be appreciated.
