October 6, 1908: the brightest, happiest day in the history of mankind. Carole was born.
Garland is becoming more and more of a soothing angel when I’m home and need some comfort from my TV set.
Rewatching In the Good Old Summertime. It’s quite charming, if you just forget The Shop Around the Corner. Judy Garland makes everything work. Van Johnson is very good too, by the way.
Rewatching The Wings of Eagles, a lesser Ford, if such a thing is possible. He mixes comedy, drama, war, and American history to brilliant effect. Plus, John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.
Rewatching Touch of Evil on the big screen. Yes, it's a great film, but sometimes too great: too much of everything makes me wish for less (less acting, less camerawork, less music, less evil).
Now showing on the big screen. A series of films based on stage plays. And the joy of watching Harlow and Barrymore on an 11-metre-plus screen.
Rewatching Girl Crazy. Never was Judy more beautiful, and she got to sing Embraceable You, I Got Rhythm, But Not for Me. Who could ask for anything more?
Rewatching Second Chance, the one where Linda Darnell and Robert Mitchum are trapped in a cable car about to crash in some hostile mountains. This was made when Howard Hughes took RKO over, and it shows. Linda and Bob deserve an A-picture budget.
The idea that I'll be watching The Baby and all that white around her on a huge screen tomorrow morning... Dinner at Eight, at 11:00 a.m.
