I quoted a take @FIRE_STICK made during his live session, and the reactions have been amusing. ๐ How myopic can we be?
Let me be clear: I do not endorse the insults STICKY directed at Shatta Wale. However, after watching the entire video, I must admit he raised some valid points. You may dislike the messenger, but that doesnโt necessarily invalidate the message.
To the SM fans coming for me, one question: If Shatta announced another Beyoncรฉ collaboration or a Super Bowl halftime performance tomorrow, wouldnโt you celebrate?
Nobody can dispute Shatta Waleโs monumental contribution to Ghanaian and African music. He built an extraordinary movement around a genre that was relatively foreign to our mainstream music landscape.
But cultural dominance is not synonymous with maximised commercial potential.
The argument that Shatta doesnโt need greater international exposure is intellectually dishonest. We all witnessed him express his desire to go global, invite professionals to submit CVs and subsequently call for investors. Clearly, the ambition exists.
When an artiste can reportedly attract more than 100,000 people to Independence Square and fill Ghanaโs biggest stadium with barely ten days of promotion, the conversation should shift from domestic dominance to global market penetration.
Interestingly, we celebrated his Beyoncรฉ collaboration, Grammy consideration and appearance alongside Vybz Kartel. We were equally excited about his London concert.
So why does advocating for more international opportunities suddenly constitute disrespect?
At this stage, Shatta could record himself snoring and his loyal fanbase would still stream it. ๐ But what about the millions of potential listeners who havenโt discovered his music?
His cultural influence is enormous, but his international commercial potential remains significantly underexploited. Beyond music, even his interest in technology and entrepreneurship presents opportunities for broader global brand positioning.
And spare me the record-label argument. Independence doesnโt preclude international success. Vybz Kartel has done it without a label. Neither should we pretend international promoters cannot afford him. If artistes like Burna Boy can command enormous international performance fees, Shatta can strategically position himself to compete for similar opportunities.
Shatta Wale has already secured his place in Ghanaian music history. The next ambition should be converting that legacy into greater global commercial influence.
Criticising an artisteโs current positioning isnโt diminishing his achievements. Sometimes, the greatest respect you can show exceptional talent is to demand that it reaches its fullest potential.
Stop being so comfortable defending what Shatta has achieved that you become resistant to what he could still accomplish.
There is a difference between defending a legacy and limiting its future.
Letโs be honest for once!
