Excellent article by Ryle Dwyer. irishexaminer.com/opinion/co… The real threat to Ireland was not from naval but from aerial attack & the development of long-range transatlantic airpower was understood in Ireland through Seán Lemass’ vision for Eire🇮🇪 as hub in transatlantic aviation.

On the morning of 5/5/1945 an ‘advanced’ JU88G-6 D5+GH of 1./NJG3, took off from Norway & flew in a westerly direction over the North Sea, racing over England & The Irish Sea where it landed in Gormanston Military Camp, defecting. Germany surrendered to the Allies 2 days later.

During WWII, Luftflotte 3 was responsible for all Luftwaffe operations over 🇬🇧&🇮🇪. March 1941, Fliegerführer Atlantik was established, KG40 carried out Maritime missions with Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor aircraft all along the Irish coast. Between 1940-1943 at least 8 crashed in 🇮🇪.

Aviation here at Collinstown dates back to 1917 & WW1 when it was a training base for the Royal Flying Corps (now the @RoyalAirForce). This 1925 pic shows the hangars & some other buildings still intact. #TBT #TBThursday
