When COVID-19 hit, scientists at @UWMedicine joined forces to develop a protein-based vaccine. The vaccine, called #SKYCovione, has just been approved in South Korea with more approvals under review. Now the team is working to create universal vaccines to stop all variants.

"Baker and his colleagues tested their strategy on 12 target proteins. [T]he researchers wound up with miniproteins that bound as strongly as, if not stronger than, most antibodies do." science.org/content/article/…

"Protein Designer" is a futuristic job i wanted to write about in a sci-fi story, but apparently it's a real job now (thanks to AlphaFold & other works) and not sci-fi anymore.
We're making #AlphaFold even better in Foldit! We're launching a new tool that let's you see the parts of a protein that are most likely to fold — and the parts that still need work. WATCH: youtube.com/watch?v=5j4h20DI…

Just as convincing images of cats can be generated using artificial intelligence, new proteins can now be made using similar tools. In a new report in @Nature, we describe a neural network approach for “hallucinating” proteins with new, stable structures. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

For decades, scientists working on a cure for AIDS were stumped by the structure of an enzyme. This enzyme was related to a virus similar to HIV. Learning its structure could mean a breakthrough in finding a cure. But they were stuck. The solution? An online game. (1/3)
