I met the devil, she was cool as fuck. Told me there's so much more to this; undeserving, cutting corners with loneliness. Mornings are a battle, and the nights are even harder, when you're tryna carve a place in something you were never part of.

What we call “the mind” is often just a small suburb of the body’s distributed intelligence. To unplug it from the body is like uprooting a plant from its soil. Yet that’s largely what we’re doing when we engage with the various virtual worlds the modern world offers us with social media, video games, porn etc.. And it’s a habit that modern society regularly installs in us in various other insidious ways. So much of our society’s journey back to sanity consists simply in making a journey back to living in our bodies.
“Overthinking” could equally be called “underbodying.” When a person’s body is effectively numb, their cognitive mind is basically all they can feel. So there’s nothing else to do but think. As soon as one reconnects to the fullness of their body, thinking automatically becomes less compelling.

When we think of expanded states of consciousness, we often think of bliss and peace. But the vast majority of what we block out of our consciousness is actually our suffering. So, to truly expand our consciousness often involves expanding it into all the suffering we don’t want to touch. This can be a useful frame to remember when we encounter difficult emotions like fear, anxiety, sadness or anger. When eg anxiety arises, we can view it as a unique opportunity to have a consciousness expanding experience. It is an invitation to allow into consciousness what we normally don’t wish to receive. In doing so, we expand the psychological territory that lives within the domain of consciousness. This means we don’t have to wait for blissful experiences of unity and expansiveness to have consciousness expanding experiences. Facing our anxiety around a procrastinated task becomes a consciousness expanding experience. Dwelling in the boredom of an unglamorous chore becomes a consciousness expanding experience. In general, the living of our every day life becomes a consciousness expanding experience. Little by little we let more and more shades of our being into awareness. Not just the rainbow shades but all the shades of black and gray we like to block out. In doing so, we also expand the pallet of bliss that is available to us. No longer is bliss just a spacious experience of pleasure. We can increasingly become familiar with the bliss of a spacious experience of anxiety or fear or sadness. Indeed, our experience of what spaciousness can be expands too. You could even say that every difficult feeling we deeply feel is a royal road to expanded consciousness, bliss and spaciousness.
There’s a meditation I like to do sometimes called “suffering meditation.” This may not sound appealing but the output can be very beautiful. It works by simply sitting still and inviting all your unconscious or repressed suffering into consciousness. The core of the meditation sits in this intent: an attitude of welcoming invitation towards feelings of pain and suffering. Then noticing them when they arrive. Holding them in awareness. And just lending your pain and suffering the light of your consciousness. Then offering it space to unfold however they wish to unfold. A few notable things I notice about suffering when I allow myself to simply hold it in this way: - My thinking mind goes very peaceful, revealing that most thoughts are simply attempts to block out suffering - Many sufferings - especially emotional ones - cease to feel like suffering when held without resistance, revealing that the suffering is often *made out of* resistance - Unconscious sufferings hold a lot of energy and bringing them into awareness can actually be very energizing as a result. - When I bring them into consciousness and let them unfold, my sufferings often eventually transform into beautiful light. At the end of this meditation my visual field will often be literally filled with beautiful flickering white light. It is this last point that always feels most profound to me. That suffering is often made of light and energy that is just temporarily bent in the wrong shape. Sometimes the process of this meditation feels like simply letting all the trapped light inside me rise and express itself. I call it “suffering meditation” but I could equally call it “light meditation.” All the light we seek is trapped in the darkness of our suffering.
