For kids like me from homes without books the Parkinson show opened a door to dazzling, unforgettable people (Orson Welles, Sir John Gielgud, Dame Edith Evans, Anthony Burgess, Muhammed Ali, a hog-whimperingly funny Billy Connolly). To a remarkable extent, Parky was our cultural education. Above all, he was a fan. He communicated his deep love of cinema, sport and jazz with passion, eloquence and a pinch of Yorkshire insubordination which meant he was never stuffy. The sheer enjoyment he brought into millions of living rooms was extraordinary. When you heard that famous jazz theme tune, you knew you were in for a good time. The best time. Thank you, Michael Parkinson, for teaching me so much and making me hungry for more. Gone to join the stars you adored. #Parky
