As children, we all received warnings to behave or else Santa would leave lumps of coal in our stockings. But how many of us understand the complicated history of coal? This month's episode of #ItStillLives explores coal in Appalachia. Listen at foxfire.org!

Today we've lost an eastern Tennessee icon who brought us love and life through comedy, activism and not being shy about our mountain twang. Rest easy, Leslie, and may we keep dreaming and believing in brighter tomorrows in your honor.

At the museum, we're seeing chestnuts and chinquapins falling all over! What's the difference? The chestnuts on the ground come from the Chinese chestnut, as the American chestnut cannot grow to maturation. Chinquapins are also known as dwarf chestnuts - they're tiny!
We are SO excited to share the cover design for our newest book, The Foxfire Book of Appalachian Women. The book will be released March 2023 and pre-orders for this inspiring volume will be available later this fall. @UNC_Press #appalachia #women #oralhistory

#FoodForThought: Have an abundance of beans this year? Looking for an easy way to preserve them? Make leather britches! "We'd take a great big long string and string the green beans and hang them up to dry. Those were leather britches to cook in the wintertime." ~Carrie Stewart

We're gearing up for a new podcast drop next week on #ItStillLives! We're taking a look back at banjo making in Southern Appalachia, from its roots in West Africa to modern bluegrass. Most folks interviewed by #Foxfire in the 70s still played traditional, unfretted banjos!
