Ecstatic that we won a Pulitzer last night for our series on Elon Musk's empire. So grateful for all my brilliant colleagues that I worked with on this!

Is London a dangerous city? One way to answer that is to compare London to other major global cities.
TL;DR: crime in London isn’t particularly high compared to other global cities in Europe and North America, but is higher than in Asia.

This @odnb entry on Clive Emsley certainly ranks highest for anything I've written on the trouble taken : words written ratio. It could never do him justice, but hopefully it's nevertheless some testament to the remarkable life of a wonderful man doi.org/10.1093/odnb/9780198…

Is it possible to reliably compare crime rates across the developed world’s largest cities? Actually, it’s harder than you might think, but for interesting reasons.
A thread for nerds 🤓…

Various claims being made about crime trends in London since 2016. Here I've prepared two charts of indexed monthly data looking at knife crime and gun crime trends relative to May 2016.
The #knifecrime data tells a mixed story: overall numbers up since 2016, but injuries down.

Great to return to the @Moneybox studio to chat with the legendary @paullewismoney and @bbcdanw about cryptocurrency-related fraud and how criminals encourage people to ‘invest’, downplay the risks and use tactics to rush them into decisions.
Thefts using cryptocurrency doubled from 2020 to 2023 - £175m stolen. A woman in her eighties had her life savings of more than seventy thousand pounds stolen. Money Box got it back for her but that is rare. @bbcdanw and criminologist @DrLisCarter on @Moneybox noon @BBCRadio4

Whether the economy grew 0.3% or shrunk 0.3% in the last quarter isn't really the issue
@CPSThinkTank figures show we need the economy to grow by 2.9% every single year for the next 50 years if we want to maintain current welfare spending. We are terrifyingly far away from that

I don't have time to pull this article apart, but remember--when you see a big shift like this in a Google Ngram chart it almost always indicates a change in the books libraries collect, NOT some deep shift in human society that happens to fit a narrative you're attached to (1/3)

Homicides recorded by @metpoliceuk since 2003 by method, with provisional data for 2023. Looks like 2023 will be the second lowest total of the last 21 years. Most variation is in knife homicides; fatal shootings v rare. #crimestats
