LATEST: As the Vatican Secretariat of State did not specify in their Sept. 30 letter what precise request was being denied, some have asked what pilgrimage organizers had requested in their letter of Sept. 8.
I had included the content of their request in my article earlier today, but have now further specified it, writing:
In his letter of 8 September, Abbé Barthe had acknowledged the Secretariat of State’s refusal to authorize a Mass in the usus antiquior, the older form of the Roman Rite, in St. Peter’s Basilica this year. He then asked:
“May we nevertheless, this coming 24 October, enter the Basilica in procession, pray for the Pope at the Confession, and adore the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of the Chair? The Basilica’s sacristy indicates to us that this would be possible at 1 p.m., should you grant us permission.”

A Sept. 30th letter from the Vatican Secretariat of State to the organizers of the annual Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage, obtained by this journalist, confirms reports that the pilgrims were barred from entering St. Peter’s Basilica in procession to pray at the tomb of the Apostle.
After a terrifying vision in 1884 Pope Leo XIII wrote the Saint Michael Prayer and instructed that it be said after every Mass.

For those asserting that the TLM Pilgrimage was somehow in the wrong, or that reports about the Vatican blocking the pilgrimage with extreme prejudice are false.
The Franciscan event was given as a pretext not to allow the Mass or the prayer at the tomb of St Peter for the following reasons: Firstly, we know that Leo had disclosed privately that he was reluctant to allow the pilgrims’ events because of criticism he had received about last year’s pilgrimage Mass in the basilica. Secondly, the Franciscan event wouldn’t have clashed with a morning Mass or prayer but it gave the Vatican a way out without having to explain the real reason why. Thirdly, the Pope and the Vatican had had since December to agree to the pilgrims’ request, ample time, if the Franciscan event had been planned long ago, to let them know of any scheduling clash. Instead that manufactured clash was only revealed at the end of September, over a month after the Secretariat of State had denied the Mass. The evidence that the Vatican simply wanted to block the Mass and prayer is therefore very clear.
But Leo was just there!
