So this just happened. The St. Paul @PioneerPress newsroom just handed and then read aloud a letter to (Denver-based Media News parent company) management: stop gutting this newspaper! It hurts St. Paul, it hurts the east metro, and it hurts the good people of Minnesota to have fewer eyes at the State Capitol, at City Hall, on your kids’ school district and on the public purse. The deadline set by management for 2-3 newsies to apply for voluntary departure benefits was Monday. We’ll know more on that front shortly. A message to Alden Global Capital: Trimming us more for your hedge fund profits is just wrong. – at St Paul, MN
This gets worse. On Sept. 9, management informed us they were slashing 2 or 3 newsroom jobs, among cuts to other departments. What do you cut when you’re down to bone? State Capitol coverage? A schools reporter? City Hall? Web editors? Our one and only photographer? The deadline to apply for a voluntary severance package is Monday. That’s less than a 2-week window to figure out if my career is over — there’s not a lot of safe landing spots in this industry. And if we long-timers don’t leave, expect lay-offs to follow. We’ve got a good team of dedicated newsies at a determined paper that wants to get it right. But management needs to bolster this newsroom and the communities we cover, not tie our hands and send us packing. Contract negotiations resume Wednesday at 1 West Water St. Expect sparks!

Combining old and new is cool. Preservation, innovation, functionality, history… When folks say “we need to respect history by building a brand new building that looks like a century-old warehouse building converted into housing,” are they really respecting history, or creating a false sense of it?
The Boston Public Library — the oldest (1848!) and probably among the largest public libraries in the nation — built a public television broadcast studio, a cafe and glassy modern addition next to its historic stone courtyard. Adjoining the old and the new shouldn’t be as hard as St. Paulites make it. Just sayin’

I told the boys if they asked the musicians at the Prudential building’s outdoor park if they played music and if they did so on instruments I’d pay them $1. Mission accomplished.
DR. SPOCK LOVED BOSTON: Leonard Nimoy, son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, saved a bit of West End Boston from gentrification and opened the West End Museum. Even the bridges commemorate its narrow old tenements with their artistic flourishes. #DuckTour

The proprietor of Valentina’s lunch/dinner and La Moreliana ice cream has worked in Twin Cities Latin, Japanese, Italian and American restaurants — and his toasted coconut-encrusted, deep-fried giant sushi rolls made with chicken or shrimp show it. Plaza Del Sol has reopened on Payne Avenue with new eateries, a bar and wedding hall, despite ongoing fears of heightened immigration enforcement: twincities.com/2026/10/25/st…
ICE has been spotted more than once this month hanging out along Payne Avenue, one of St. Paul’s Latin business districts. That’s scared customers away just as a series of new venues open their doors. The newly-remodeled Plaza Del Sol has at least three new eateries. twincities.com/2026/10/25/st…

Critics say the city is still in the process of rolling out administrative citations, and renters can already take landlords to court and get their rent put in escrow until repairs are done. “Right to Repair” proponents say that’s a slow, heavy lift when all you need is your washing machine to stop making a high-pitched noise, your dishwasher to work, or a new lock on your front door. Then there’s the question of market impacts — plenty of investors and developers are already avoiding buying or building new housing in St. Paul. On the other hand… twincities.com/2026/10/25/st…
St. Paul voters have one ballot question before them this November — If a renter needs a repair done, and the landlord doesn’t do it, should they have the right to get the repair taken care of themselves and withhold the equivalent amount of cash from their rent/seek reimbursement? twincities.com/2026/10/25/st…

He's been linked to trying to pull a woman through a window, bashing a woman, entering a teen's bedroom as she slept and sucking on her foot and then throwing her against a wall -- all allegations outlined in criminal charges. A judge let him out of jail weeks ago without yet going to trial on the Ramsey County accusations. The St. Paul Police Department has issued a public safety alert asking for the public’s help in locating a suspected serial sexual assault suspect. An arrest warrant has been issued for Eduart Gomez Ochoa, 27, of Minneapolis in connection with an alleged kidnapping and burglary attempt. Police believe Gomez Ochoa may have struck again this week in the capital city. St. Paul police said they responded to the 700 block of Como Avenue about 9:10 a.m. Thursday following a report of a man attempting to pull a woman from her apartment through a window. “He didn’t take the victim. He fled,” said Nikki Muehlhausen, a spokesperson for the St. Paul Police Department. “What he’s been doing follows the exact M.O. of his previous incidents.” twincities.com/2026/10/23/st…
