"the purpose of an essay is what it does"
A lot of you guys are very bad at recognizing artisinal ragebait from professional liars if it comes in the form of a written essay organized in paragraphs rather than a tiktok shot inside a car. If an author is well-known because their work always makes people really mad and gets everyone talking about them, they are almost certainly doing it on purpose. If their stated positions or motivations contradict each other but always happen to get them lots of fame and attention, they are probably lying about their positions and motivations to get fame and attention.

Replying to @xwanyex
Once I went to a "Descent Into Hell" dance party. Half an hour in, I started feeling off balance, like something was trying to get into my head and throw me out of whack. So I thought "Oh yeah, it's literally called Descent Into Hell, this was unwise" and left immediately.

"We're in a world where you can't trust anything!" is the most midwit thing ever. Some of us knew that for a long time now.

We need to write the story where someone uses a difference engine to vibe code a loom
St. Anthony Mary Claret died on this day in 1870. He was a loom programmer at 18, then an archbishop, then the Queen of Spain's confessor. He got stabbed in the face and asked the court to spare the guy's life. He also wrote 144 books. Your weekend dare: one chapter. He'd have knocked out three before Mass.

Since fanfic is what we're talking about this week I'll share a link to my Man in the High Castle story, the most intricate by far plot I've ever devised and, arguably, my best work of any kind ever: fanfiction.net/s/11717812/1/…

So I just reread this after years and, wow, am I allowed to say this is maybe the most brilliant, confusing thing ever? Gene Wolfe, eat your heart out.

Forgive me but butt naked is just better. The vox populi will not be gainsaid.
We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Everyone should watch this interview on @triggerpod . Oliver Malcolm reports from inside on the monoculture in publishing. Threats of staff revolts, moralizing, intolerance, and books sabotaged. Money left on the table because there is no openness to alternative views in an industry that is supposed to be about the exploration of knowledge and the human condition. At the same time, we are treated to the "banned book" cunnard as a marketing plot for pitching the monoculture values as "resistance." Hats off to @HighLine__ for doing something about it.
The chief executive of High Line Publishing and former managing director of Hodder & Stoughton Oliver Malcolm appeared on the TRIGGERnometry podcast on 17th October, where he spoke on the number of women working in publishing, DEI efforts, and monoculturalism in the industry, among other topics. 👇 ebx.sh/Low9Vv

One of the most misinformed groups in the world has to be people who watch John Oliver religiously, this is one of the better forum posts on the phenomenon of the "comedic-news" segments
HBO's @LastWeekTonight has a long track record of citing social science findings without the appropriate context, massaging them to support whatever point @iamjohnoliver is trying to make.

okay but that sounds like work
the reason you as a 130+ IQ chud need to become rich and powerful is not because it will cure your depression (though it will) but because it will cure your interminable irritation at the law of entropy. No longer will you have to be inconvenienced by things always breaking or retarded people being retarded. You can just throw money at the problem by replacing it or hiring someone competent to handle it on your behalf.

I have no idea what these words mean but the picture triggers my trypophobia BIG TIME
increasingly concerned that ai is revealing the mathematical world as negatively curved. instead of everyone wandering about in idea-space and clustering around the same famous conjectures (local positive curvature), ai is pushing out the boundaries rapidly and revealing that the space of mathematical ideas is ~hyperbolic (negative curvature). though this means there's lots left to discover, it also means that small separations between people/agents will lead to wandering alone. we may be emerging into an idea-space where there's so much to see and do but everyone is alone in a private heaven, unable to share their subtle joys with others...

Once again, my Fri-Sat schedule. And I now understand why I do this: God gave us Fri-Sat to do what we were supposed to do Mon-Wed.
