After visiting the first Zuzalu, I was pretty sceptical about pop-ups. They’re starting to come of age now, though. Wide reach, real world results and proper business models. I’m bullish.

Bitcoiners called it again. A few months ago, Bitcoin was the canary in the coal mine. Over the summer, the Bitcoin ecosystem was hit first: the Coldcard firmware exploit, emergency patches at Core Lightning, and a flood of AI-generated bug reports. The base protocol held. The weaknesses were in the software built around it, and the response was a volunteer red team pointing AI at hundreds of Bitcoin repositories and fixing what it found in the open. This week the rest of the internet got its turn. PHP2Shell, a set of flaws that had sat in PHP for over a decade, was found with frontier AI models and patched on 21 October. PHP runs roughly three quarters of the web, and governments took their own sites offline while they scrambled to update. Bitcoin went first because it is the biggest open bug bounty in the world, and anything with money attached gets probed first. Banks, payment rails, hospitals and government databases are next, and most have relied for decades on obscurity and slow attackers. That cover is gone. It will probably be quite painful for a while. What survives will be simpler, tougher and more honest about its own weaknesses. Stress is how resilient systems get built.

What good is cheap electricity if someone else can switch it off? That question cost us a lot to learn. Paraguay. Ethiopia. Cheap power on paper. In reality, the switch was always in someone else’s hands. So we stopped renting energy and started owning it. I sat down again with @MrTimothyAllen on the Free Cities Podcast, three years after our first conversation in San Salvador. We didn’t do the polished version. We talked about: ⚡ What actually happened to our mining operations in Paraguay and Ethiopia 🛢️ Why AmityAge is moving into gas wells and power generation in Alberta 🤖 Bitcoin mining vs. AI data centres, and why the hype cycle is a risk, not a strategy 🚩 Why “I know the right people” is a red flag in this industry 🎓 Training Bitcoin educators from India to the Muslim world 🏝️ Próspera: what works, what doesn’t, and why a city needs families, not just digital nomads Also: a basketball court, a Bitcoin logo, and local politics on Roatán. The lesson from all of it: in Bitcoin mining, energy sovereignty is everything. Same goes for building a free city. If you don’t control the fundamentals, you don’t control your future. Keep building. 🧡 🎧 Full episode: youtube.com/watch?v=988e4wZQ… #Bitcoin #BitcoinMining #Energy #Alberta #Prospera #FreeCities #AmityAge

Monday morning catch-up: @PatrickHiebert of Veritas Villages is planning a walkable European-style town in Costa Rica. He tells @MrTimothyAllen how much freedom a developer can build under existing laws, then asks why Timothy still lives in Britain despite his criticisms of it... A Free City can import a tax code, a court system and a set of regulations. It cannot import a culture. That has to be established by the first people who move there, which may make choosing the pioneers more important than choosing the laws.

This is how you sleepwalk into a surveillance state. It does not arrive overnight. It is chipped away, one ‘reasonable’ measure at a time, until proving who you are becomes a condition of participating in everyday life.
🚨NEWS: The Government wants Britons to face PASSPORT ID checks for social media access "Children deserve real online protections, not a sweeping surveillance scheme that has failed across the world and will introduce new risks to their safety." "This is not a policy for children, but one that affects every single adult using social media in the country. " "The Government’s requirement that all of us show a passport or driving license to open a social media account is a national ID scheme by the back door." - Maya Thomas, Legal and Policy Officer Read our full statement⤵️ bigbrotherwatch.org.uk/press…

What's stopping you from relocating? @PatrickHiebert is planning to build a European town on a Costa Rican cattle ranch. Thirty hectares, cobbled streets, cafés & shops. Then he asks @MrTimothyAllen the awkward question. Given everything he says about Britain, why is he still living there? Watch👇 youtube.com/watch?v=QK7dfgoF…

Some conversations are so fascinating you just don't know when to stop.
This week: The longest episode we've ever made. Nearly four hours with @thetreygoff, chief of staff at @ProsperaGlobal. This is an extremely deep dive into AI and what it might mean for you in the future. It opens on security: a flaw that sat unnoticed in hardware wallets for five years, and what happened when a model finally found it. Then OpenAI agents escaping a test sandbox and taking over a data centre. Then it turns to something that matters more for most people. Trey calls it 'The Sort'. AI won't lift everyone equally. It accelerates a separation that was already underway, between people who use these tools to multiply what they can do and people who get replaced by them. From there: meaning versus happiness, flow state, and whether a man running a chicken farm in Mississippi is living a better life than a private equity partner in Manhattan. 200 episodes. The first was recorded in @ProsperaGlobal four years ago. So is the 200th. @erickbrimen, founder and CEO, on the press war, the arbitration, Crawfish Rock, and whether Próspera survives its own success. What's changed in four years is that this used to be about what a Free City might be. It's now about arbitration clauses, schools, power supply and why nobody can get a decent coffee. Less glamorous. Much better sign. Thanks to everyone who's listened, argued, supported or been on the show. Watch👇 youtube.com/watch?v=00sq3k6_…

Following up on @FreeCitiesConf, I'm most impressed by the progress made by the @Seasteading Institute. 10 years ago, this was all theoretical. Now the @real_Arkpad technology allows to actually have completely floating cities in international waters.

Recorded Feb 2025, when @DanielJHannan was a Conservative peer. Since then he has taken over as Director General of the Institute of Economic Affairs, given up the Conservative whip and gone independent in the Lords. The conversation holds up. His core argument: liberty is a minority creed. It is counterintuitive, it has to be actively taught, and when a country stops teaching it you find out how fast it goes. We also get into lockdown as a mobilisation event on the scale of 1940, the common law as a happy accident of island geography, and why he thinks the cure for imported American politics will come from America too. What if the real value of a network state isn’t replacing the nation state, but giving people a layer of coordination the state can’t easily control? @pcekerevac calls it a “cloud Hanseatic League”: money, contracts, communication and communities preserved online, then “downloaded” into physical jurisdictions when the opportunity appears. We also get into Próspera, pop-up cities, Vitalia, why some of Silicon Valley’s biggest names are paying attention, and whether the future is one Próspera or 20,000.
