#OTD Oct 29, 1931: William Grant Still’s “Afro-American Symphony” was 1st presented by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The 1st symphony composed by a Black composer to be performed by a major orchestra. It combines a fairly traditional symphonic form with blues progressions and rhythms that were characteristic of popular African-American music at the time.

「宇宙戦艦ヤマト」で波動砲、主砲、パルスレーザー等などの効果音を作成した柏原満さんも、西崎Pから「SF作品のメカが出す音なので、今まで誰も聞いたことのないような音が欲しい」と要求され、あれらの音を作ったそうです。西崎Pは一発OKを出したそうですよ。
特に主砲のビームエネルギーが収束されて放出しているような音は感心されたそうです。波動砲発射段階の音もね、凄いと言われたとか。
ヤマトが攻撃を受けて艦内で何かが破壊された時、ガラスが砕けるような音が聞こえるのは色々苦心して、精密なメカが壊れたという繊細さを出すためにああいう音にしたという話も聞きました。
昭和の効果音職人は、さらっと場面場面に合う音を作っているけど、アナログでどうやってんだ？というのがありますものね。
柏原満さん曰く、意外にも電子音を作る際にシンセサイザーのような機材を使用するより、アナログの方がそれらしい音が出来るそうです。
こういう技術も失われつつあるのだと思います。
効果音職人って、作品のファンにはあんまり注目されていない印象がありますが、結構凄いんですよ。

Today, I received a threatening letter at my Grand Rapids, Michigan office that contained unidentified white powder. The letter, which claimed to be from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), made a direct and specific reference to an impending “civil war” beginning after the election. The letter sent to my office is similar to those received at other congressional offices across the country. The DSA has not yet addressed the attacks, either to condemn them or to take or deny responsibility. The Grand Rapids Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) responded immediately.
Threats and extremism are not signs of strength—they are signs of a weak mind and weak character. Political intimidation has no place in our democracy, and leaders must condemn it, not excuse it. I’ll keep standing up to bullies on the right and the left.
