“Very few things impact population health and reduce inequalities as powerfully as tackling tobacco. That’s why we must keep the momentum going.”

Cathy thought smoking helped her cope with stress. She realised it only made it worse, but stopping helped.
Cathy is one of the faces of our #SmokingSurvivors campaign. Support and encouragement can help people trying to stop, and turn a new year into a #SmokefreeFuture

Celebrating success! 🎉
Congrats to Darlington Stop Smoking Hub, our Team of the Quarter at the Stop Smoking Community of Improvement.
Their work is helping more people go smoke-free. 👏
“Every day, I wish I could turn back the clock to the first time I picked up a cigarette”
Like many in the NE, Cathy from County Durham started young, unaware of the risks.
Now a #SmokingSurvivor, she’s encouraging others to quit—for their health, wealth & family.

Stop the spread of winter bugs!
• Use a tissue to cover your mouth & nose when you cough or sneeze
• Dispose of the tissue in a bin - catch it, bin it, kill it!
• Wash your hands regularly and use soap and water for at least 20 seconds
• Clean and disinfect surfaces after use
As we start 2026, smoking is still the biggest cause of cancer – nearly 1 in 3 cancer deaths in the NE.
It’s needed, wanted and workable.
Local people support national plans for a #SmokeFreeFuture, free from tobacco’s harm.
🚭Local councils are helping to drive a #SmokeFreeFuture!
✔ 90% now prioritise tobacco control
✔ Quit success up 34% since 2022/23

This winter we are highlighting the impact of smoking on NHS #WinterPressures and calling on healthcare professionals to do VBA- a simple 30 sec intervention that saves lives. #VeryBriefAdvice #SmokefreeNHS #SmokefreeFuture
For 25+ years, Stop Smoking Services have helped people quit with support that works. With expert support, people are 3x more likely to stop smoking – and around 400,000 successful quits in the NE prove it.

With just under a year to go until the smokefree generation takes effect, ASH CEO @HazelCheeseman has written to retailers to discuss what the policy means for businesses and highlight the long-term benefits of the policy for retailers and for children’s health.
The latest phase of our #SmokingSurvivors campaign is back. Real stories show the serious harm smoking causes - from heart disease to cancer.
Every cigarette takes around 20 minutes off your life. Stopping reduces harm and gives life back, no matter how many times you’ve tried.
Brilliant! CBE well deserved.
🙌Huge congratulations to Professor Ann McNeill who has been awarded a CBE for services to research into addiction and mental health. We are delighted to see Ann's lifesaving work recognised.
